It is becoming more and more apparent with the photo documentation of ICE raids that most people are getting their idea of what a cop, federal law enforcement officer (a type of cop), SWAT team, etc is "supposed to" look like from TV and movies.

This will become a thread about why this is wrong.
"Car 54 where are you?" Scene from "The X Files: I want to believe" with a bunch of FBI guys in perfectly matching, brand-new uniforms from black knit hat to black FBI parkas to black boots, against a background of snow and mountains. They're all clean-shaven white men of approximately the same height. A scene from the 2003 movie "SWAT" with Colin Farrell and Samuel L. Jackson. Five actors in, again, perfectly matching, crisp uniforms of dark navy blue BDUs (military-style cargo pants and coordinating jacket) with black tactical vests, elbow pads, pouches, and firearms. One actor is wearing a baseball cap. The LA police department patch on their left shoulders is "subdued", meaning instead of being in full color, it is navy blue with grayish lettering. They also have earpiece headsets.

ok, I was previously unaware it was a cop "pranking" his child.

This guy is going to need a new, safe place to live ASAP.

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.
On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.

A federal judge has ruled that a controversial security fence constructed around the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Broadview is violating the west suburb’s right to access its own land and ordered its removal by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.

Cook County sheriff mostly handles the courts, corrections (massive Cook County jail), and civil stuff like evictions, so...this might actually be fine if fewer deputies are available for evictions. They don't do a whole lot of patrol or investigations.

I just keep thinking of that two or three year old little boy, who couldn't even understand what was happening...

I can't even remember how many times I did this, but also, if everybody in the class is using AI to write their papers on the same subject, they're gonna be the same paper.

i wrote a 20 page paper that was essentially my capstone for my entire degree in college on one saturday by locking myself in a study room with some chips and a few coca colas. Wrote the whole thing in 8 hours and turned it in essentially unchanged. Got an A.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

So actually, construction trades are keeping the economy afloat right now. With a 50% tariff on copper, all that electrical work is gonna cost a pretty penny.

If you are a federal worker, there are several credit unions and other financial institutions that are offering zero interest loans during the government shutdown.

Same shit different era.

I wonder if they're targeting the Polish guys at that location, or just the brown people?

Blood Quantum, if you haven't seen it. It's a zombie movie but it's quite unique.

It's all good. I think it's useful for us all to have megathreads we can share with each other - and so I will second the request for stories

I mean it would be pretty hard for him to fuck up the economic growth

State treasuries cannot withhold money from the federal government because state treasuries do not send money to the federal government, individual taxpayers in those states do via federal income tax.

I wouldn't give Gavin Newsom credit for California being the 4th largest economy. It's been an economic leader for much, much longer than he has been in office.

He does definitely deserve credit for helping to create the homelessness crisis in California.
