😎 the WNBA is “culturally cool” now, says sports sociologist @rachelallison.bsky.social in this enlightening article from @benpickman.bsky.social

Take the time to read this one, by @benpickman.bsky.social Young boys being interested is so important, not just for the league but for women in general. Respect for women in one arena carries over.
A new generation is embracing the WNBA, including young boys

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

NBA is just using Engelbert as a scapegoat. She is tone deaf, but she’s not the one making the decisions. Meat shield.

On a recent episode of Good Game @sarahspain.com made a point about the sexism in the “the girlies are fighting” undertone to the #WNBA labor situation coverage and now I can’t unhear it (especially from some specific outlets).

I forgot Dewanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas were engaged.

I'm telling my grandchildren in 20 years that A'ja hit the game winner over a married couple (close enough). Lawdhammercy she's ruthless! 🤣

Probably not easily, because they don’t play the same game — Unrivaled is 3v3, and AU Basketball is 5v5.

Disclaimer: Mostly I’m sharing this article because of old Detroit Shock pics that include favorite Orlando Miracle players like Taj McWilliams, Pee Wee Johnson, Elaine Powell, and Brooke Wyckoff. The hazardous waste thing is 🥴

But it’s too “personal,” right Adam and Cathy? Think of her grown kids: how will they ever forgive her for missing their birthdays if the league can’t underpay and insult women players?

I have a guard bias, but it’s good to see Howard and Burton getting recognized. I kinda thought maybe Chelsea Gray?
rainesgs.bsky.social
It’s early, but I could maybe see Paige Bueckers as future great coach. And, hear me out, Aari McDonald. So smart, love her bball IQ. Also, it just seems that the harder a player has to work, the better a coach they can be. Not sure if she is a motivator type, though.

Honestly, I see Nneka as an executive (or elected official) moreso than a coach. Chelsea, yes.

Let’s hear it for 🏀 legend Jennifer Gillom and the “Mighty Mercury” song she interpolated from the Bolton Family’s “Mighty Ruthie”

Gillom and Van Chancellor were brilliant at Ole Miss in the 1980s before breaking out in the #WNBA in 1997
