He gives a small smile.

Augustine's trouble is that he doesn't have particularly good bedside manners, I suppose - most of the time people are too busy being insulted to hear the kindness or constructive truth alongside it.
He's not a cruel person, he's just not kind. Change is rarely kind or comfortable, but is necessary.
