The reality is that to most Americans, being overtly homophobic makes you look like a huge dick. Because hating somebody for something they can't control is dickish. TERFs especially cannot handle this reality because their entire worldview hinges on gender identity not being real.

Although you see it pop up in pockets, generally speaking conservatives have given up on trying to convince that sexual orientation is a choice. So they are desperate to avoid ceding the same ground to gender identity. Except this time they have support from liberal TERFs.

Like, merely admitting that gender identity is real pretty much is admitting to their own bigotry. They literally cannot acknowledge the existence of it, in order to avoid cognitive dissonance. In much the same way conservatives denied sexual orientation as inherent and immutable.

One of the most irritating things I frequently encounter from transphobes is oddly similar to anti-vaxxer logic. Namely, that scientific evidence which contradicts their opinion is simply dismissed outright. When confronted with evidence about gender identity, the response is always utter denial.
