There are some basic things you can learn; composition, lighting, and so on. You take good pictures as it is, so you may already know much of those basics.
If you do decide to get a (digital) camera, the ability to get the photos out of it and into other devices is important.
Waterproof may be good.

This is a really good point!

I am a spontaneous person.
Some others less so.
I can actually get in the car and drive almost randomly and find something worth seeing.
The “outing” is good. My ”planning” less so.

I have a pretty good idea what most of the wounds are, it’s more a question of “How can I alter the course to steer clear of the problems it usually causes?” because I already know I’m kind of weird.
