I can also recommend using the bustimes.org.uk website from your mobile phone. You can look at the location of the buses in real time, so you know if the bus is delayed or not.
It would be a lot cheaper to get an East Sussex Day Rider Ticket for £6.10. This gives you unlimited travel on all buses in East Sussex, so you can hop on and off as you please. We used it to get to Rye from Eastbourne and back, took a couple of hours, but our 8 year old absolutely loved it.
