My first post here may as well be about an important topic; inclusion.

I attended a high-profile workshop last week, which made me reflect on how easy it is to exclude people from the start.

Weeknote – Exclusion starts at user journey mapping
This weeknote is a bit different. Instead of a list of things I did, I want to reflect more deeply on one theme from last week.

Thanks Caroline and thank you for always being a great source of honest and wise advice.
I've said it many times before, but this is the closest I'll get to using my experience and skills to save lives. There's no greater mission than that.
In short though, it's been incredibly hard at times, sometimes feeling like an almost impossible task. It's also been the most rewarding work I've ever done, work most aligned to my values and a mission I believe in.
I led the community through 3 reorganisations, a pandemic and far too many events in the world that affected members personally.
I started reflecting and writing down what I have learnt and achieved in my 10 years. I'm working out the best way to share it as there's far too much to write here.
I have built ops capability, a career ladder, inclusive design principles, UR policies, standards, strategies, a repository, communities of practice & led a community that have delivered a knowledge base and multiple new training opportunities to help develop the capability of the organisation.
It's become about leadership of digital, delivery, transformation.
In 10 years I have worked on the e-referral service, NHS alpha, NHS login, Personal Health Records, Empower the Person portfolio, Digital Transformation of Screening, Covid Testing, Digital Primary Care, Digital Neighbourhood.
Today marks 10 years since I started in the NHS. A career that began as a user researcher, continued through working my way up to head of user research and now to a role which is unrecognisable from my job description and title, wider than user research or service design or user centred design.

Between the tepid bath and the cloud of vapour: a plea for pragmatic ambition

Big thank you to everyone working today to help us all keep safe and well. This morning hundreds of members of the Jewish community took gifts to those working.

I had the privilege to visit the delivery unit where my children were born. I took my daughter with so she could deliver a gift back
December #Monthnote including pre break rush, bright shoots in digital primary care, 5 little words that meant a lot and focus for next year.

Thank you to my cheerleaders, challengers & fellow disruptors. Wish everyone a happy, healthy & peaceful new year

Thanks Katy and as others have said, quite some list to be on too!
We really value and welcome diversity of thought and lived experience so please share this role as widely as possible to reach people that we are not connected with. We will do everything we can to ensure the application process, interview and role is as inclusive as possible.

Make sure you use the supporting statement space to your advantage and fill it with examples of how you meet each of the criteria for the role. I see many applications where this space isn’t used and people not getting to interview as evidence against the criteria isn't there.
If you are thinking about applying but are not sure whether you meet all of the criteria for the role, my advice is please still consider applying. Nobody will tick every single criteria on the application.
The title 'Lead' can mean different things. Simplifying it greatly:
- User Researchers lead user research on a product
- Senior URs lead a team of user researchers working across a number of products
- Lead URs lead teams of URs & UCD colleagues across a portfolio of products

It's products help patients get essential services and appropriate care quickly. They are used in Urgent and Emergency care settings, by NHS 111 telephone service, 999 service providers and powers 111 Online. It supports the 23 million remote symptom assessments per year.

I know my Bluesky profile is exceedingly suspect (no avatar, low post count, handful of followers), but I’m definitely a legit human, and happy to buy a couple of Camp Digital tickets for folks in early stages of career. The Nexer bods are matching me too, so do pass it on. Thanks.
If you’re from an underrepresented group (by ethnicity, disability, gender identity, etc), and in your early years of a design/tech career, I’ll shout you a ticket to Camp Digital in May. In-person and online options. First come first served! www.nexerdigital.com/campdigital/...
