Everytime the tree works the leaves dream

Everytime I carve the dead wing my name
in the dark lamp of the outhouse
I said everytime I cut my name
in the old wood rotten as a tugboat
I know I am always with you

All is well in Pajamastan tonight—staying in and settled in with
🫖 tea,
📚 a pile of books thishigh,
✉️ letter writing,
🎻and this exquisite Leclair sonata, which is a fine distraction from doomscrolling (highly recommend!).

AUGUST

from the french-haitian's collection, Island Heart, translated by danielle legros georges.
Autumn

The leaves fall, it's Autumn
The tall boxwood trees perfume the air.
A bird's song in the clear sky
Seems a monotonous wail.

I think of those eyes so precious to me
While the roses wither
And I foresee leaden days
With all their bitterness.

The darkness approaching the terrace
Brings with it night's coolness
And I recall hopelessly
The sorrows that just won't die.

The breeze makes a soft sound
Through the dry leaves
But all I hear on the fallen flowers
Are love's footsteps fleeing.

And I stay here, thinking
Despite it all, waiting, for joy
But a vague doubt all at once
Makes me afraid.

I understand my sadness now.
Your heart is leaving me
And this autumn
All my love will weep in me.

the rest of my days I spend
wandering: wondering
what, anyway,
was that sticky infusion, that rank flavor of blood, that poetry, by which I lived?

"I’ve employed the reflective voice in some memoir pieces, but often I find that when my “present self” enters the picture, events can get reinterpreted and their significance diluted. I strive instead to keep the blinders on." This week's author, Mary Ann McGuigan: www.smokelong.com/interviews/s...

How long you turned, sluggish in your sour bed, asleep inside a living bog, your hair amending slowly orange. Did you cry out? Or accept it as your fate— a young woman more likely to appease an angry god? Were they gentle, the men who hung you from a tree, cocooned you in sheepskin, then watched you sink into the mire?

It is the scientist whose truth requires a language purged of every trace of paradox; apparently the truth which the poet utters can be approached only in terms of paradox.
