Do I know anyone on here who has either applied for or received an AHRC Catalyst Award?

My kid is almost 14 and I am STILL the parent who says "I told you so" when I tell her that if she does X, Y will happen, and then she does X and is surprised when Y happens.

I mean, if such a conference existed, and these were the type of people attending it, I would *totally* go.

More job ads in philosophy of AI/data science in the last 3-4 years than there have been places supervising/training PhD students in philosophy of AI/data science...

I wonder if Dutch philosophy departments in the 1630s were only hiring in the philosophy of tulips.

One might also say "hiring committees".

I think the union activists/1980s punks (the two categories basically overlapped) were fine with the existence of neon punk, it was the Gen alphas insisting that there could be no non-neon punk in the 1980s that bothered them!

Ahhh, didn't realize it was a requirement in Scotland!

Go Scotland...

We've never had them, at my institution. It always amazes me when I go to another uni and they have them!

While I was chairing a number of the sessions, Hyunjin kept catching my eye, and I couldn't tell if he was trying to flirt with me or if he had a question, b/c whenever I tried to call on him someone else would interrupt with "more of a comment than a question". A frustrating chairing experience!

Eventually, the fashionistas compromised on admitting that punk existed, but insisting that in the 2020s, if you wanted to dress in retro 1980s *punk* fashion, it still had to be in neon.
saraluckelman.bsky.social
The retro fashionistas were trying to argue that all 1980s fashion was neon, while the unionists were arguing that punk existed in the 1980s (and in fact, most of the unionists were dressed in punk).

Last night I dreamt I was at an interdisciplinary conference on trade union activism and 1980s fashion. In the audience were a bunch of my DUCU friends (@riccrossman.bsky.social, you were there!), people I knew when I was in highschool, and Hyunjin from Stray Kids.

The thing about Horrible Histories is that it can be years (not quite a decade, but getting close!) since you last watched it, and yet you STILL find yourself in bed just after midnight on a Friday night, listening to "Literally", b/c you just can't stop thinking about it.

I went from "ooooh, they've actually turned the heat on in the building finally!" this morning to "so, every student coming into my office is saying they're ill, perhaps I'll open a window" in the afternoon to "gosh, it's REALLY NICE OUT" today!

The fact that women's clothing don't all functional pockets, and children's clothing doesn't come in adult sizes is all the evidence I need that capitalism doesn't actually work the way capitalists say it does.

Because if it did, we would have these things, 'cause we would buy the hell out of them.

On the upside, today I did 3.5 hours of union casework, attended a mentoring lunch where someone *actually had a question about philosophy* that I could help them with, met with six of my academic advisees, AND marked two master's project reports so all my marking due Monday is done.

Wasn't there a calculator for academic grant writing where you put in amount of funds, chance of getting funded, and estimated hours of preparing the proposal to calculate whether it's worth applying at all?

Or a formula? Please, I need it.

Today has very much been one of those "I can either check/respond to emails or I can do actual work but not both" sort of days...

*sigh*

TFW you paid $1400 to see Beckett’s most famous work without knowing anything about it
One Star Review of Waiting for Godot on Broadway
I recently attended Waiting for Godot on Broadway and spent over $1,400 for two Row C seats (103 and 104). I'm a longtime admirer of Broadway productions and even hold a season pass for Shea's Performing Arts Theatre, so I came in with genuine enthusiasm and high expectations. Unfortunately, this show was unlike anything ! have ever experienced —and not in a good way.
What I encountered was not the artistry, music, or emotional storytelling I usually associate with Broadway, but instead what felt like an endless cycle of nonsensical conversation between characters who seemed trapped in their own madness. I tried-truly tried-to find meaning, symbolism, or even a thread of emotional resonance. I stayed through the first half hoping the second would offer clarity. But by intermission, it was clear: this was a waste of both time and money.
Keanu Reeves is an actor I respect greatly, but I cannot fathom why he would agree to participate in such a disjointed, inaccessible production. His talent was lost in a performance that defied reason rather than provoked insight.
To anyone considering attending: unless you are drawn to highly abstract, nearly incomprehensible theater, I strongly caution you against this show. For the average, educated, thoughtful theatergoer, it is far more frustrating than fulfilling. In my opinion, this was the single most disappointing Broadway experience I've ever had - an unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time.

Okay, so the best TV show theme song ever is ST:TNG, but I won't share that one, I'll share one which is both an excellent song AND has amazing graphics to go with it: "Fire and Water" (水火), the main title of Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty:
