🧵 As the #OvershootConference drew to a close today, the final plenary offered a space to step back and reflect across themes. What stood out was both the urgency and interconnectedness of the challenges we face when confronting climate overshoot:

A paper in Nature suggests a quarter of heatwave events from 2000-23 would have been near impossible without anthropogenic climate change. The paper also indicates that major carbon emitters are responsible for around 50% of the increase in intensity of these events. ⚒️ 🧪
Systematic attribution of heatwaves to the emissions of carbon majors - Nature
Climate change made 213 historical heatwaves reported over 2000–2023 more likely and more intense, to which each of the 180 carbon majors (fossil fuel and cement producers) substantially contributed.

NEW STUDY: How much CO2 can we safely store in geological formations?

In a new @nature.com study, we cross-check established academic and industry estimates with various risk factors.

We find a prudent geological CO2 storage limit that is about 10x smaller. /1

New assessment on the biophysical potential of forestation to sequester carbon. As expected, we found just a fraction of what other assessments found, because we considered the obvious no-nos, such as risk to biodiversity, excess water use, and regional warming.

The climate case for planting trees has been overhyped — but it’s not too late to fix it
Reforestation can contribute significantly to tackling climate change, but research found its global potential is only a fraction of what’s been claimed.

Effects are mediated by biota & soil moisture.
Robust #CDR assessments require considering organic carbon.

We see here a self-styled "honest broker" with decades of experience in downplaying climate change presenting an age-old climate denial trope: using *annual* rainfall data as argument against an increase in *extreme* rainfall.
Does he *really* not know better? Or assume his readers won't?

Heatwaves in June 2025 were intensified by record breaking Mediterranean temperatures more than 5°C above average

Impacts of marine #heatwaves:
🪸🐠 heat stress in marine ecosystems
🌊 📉 reduce oxygen levels effecting ocean industries
🥵 Increase humidity, ⬆️ heat stress for people
➕many more

Ours is the first study to demonstrate an historical increase (by a factor of three!) in the occurrence of atmospheric resonance, which is associated with many of the most devastating and deadly persistent summer weather extremes in recent years (e.g. Pacific Northwest Heat Dome of summer '21) 🧵
