They will continue to make lists like these and they will continue to be dominated by shows with prominent queer representation.

Our shows deserve proper endings. #SaveQueerStories

Thank you @bjcolangelo.bsky.social for this article! Queer-inclusive shows like Dead End were already struggling for support, lacking promotion and getting canceled early and more often. We need these narratives and should be supporting them now!

With folks rediscovering the canceled Dead End: Paranormal Park, let's discuss what makes Netflix's animated family show a streaming series worth embracing.

We’ve been researching these attacks on queer-inclusive TV shows for about the last year or so. The data is really something. Queer-inclusive shows were 2x more likely to be canceled or “ended” in 2024, despite performing as well as other shows.

Queer representation is life-saving. This is grim.

1. Led by Elon Musk, the far-right has exploded in a campaign to get Netflix to remove shows with queer and trans characters.

If Netflix capitulates to their demands, an already strained market for LGBTQ+ animators might become even more dire.

The grim aspect of this retroactive outrage is that the fascists already won on this front. These people are getting mad about shows from the '10s and early '20s because there's vanishingly few now. They've already been purged. But fascism can never "win", it always looks backward for more enemies.

This is proof that conservative parents don't spend actual time with their kids (well, we know Graham doesn't). If they did, they'd know that there have been queer characters on Netflix (and Disney, Nickelodeon etc.) for decades. Like, they're only just discovering Dead End Paranormal Park.

They’re talking about Lisa Kudrow’s show The Comeback which is getting a third season a decade later—this could be us, never give up!

FIVE of the shows on this list are represented in our partnering fandoms.

Our Flag Means Death, The Wheel of Time, The Acolyte, My Lady Jane, and Shadow and Bone.

There seems to be a pattern.

“…it's no surprise the romantic pirate comedy accumulated a cult following during its two-season run. Not only did #OFMD take viewers on entertaining swashbuckling adventures, but it featured an LGBTQ+ love story that will go down as one of television's greatest.”

Power speaks about media representation the same way it speaks about education, and that's because both have a similar capability of making a more connected, informed, diverse, and empathetic citizenry.

All progress is decried as going too far + being too much, even though it never goes far enough.

I think this conversation often misses that Hollywood has never actually achieved diverse storytelling. We've never had a time when representation for marginalized people was anywhere near prevalent or nuanced enough. We're simply losing the little we had - even though data shows viewers want more.

Isn’t annoying when petty stuff like “real life” gets in the way of the important things like “doing math about gay TV shows”?

I would love to see this essay! The topic is evergreen, but especially relevant right now.

Hate is built on fear. The cure to fear is knowledge, experience, and empathy. So the backbone of any censorship movement is their ability to convince people that those three things are actually bad.

We have a very easy argument to make if you think about it... We just need to be louder about it.

“banning pornography” is bad on its own but it is imperative that everyone understand that these people consider the very existence of queer people to be pornographic

they consider the most chaste depiction of a queer relationship, or an openly trans person, to be porn and they want it banned

You don’t have to like, approve of, or engage with porn and nsfw work to see how right wing extremists are using fear and stigma around smut to ban queer people from public life, define “good” sex as only between married people for procreation, and otherwise further force white supremacy on everyone

All forms of anti-LGBTQ+ censorship are connected by the explicit goal of isolating queer people from others in society. I'm glad Amy chose to speak up.
