i always kinda feel like a boomer in my insistence to call sonic's world Mobius but i just think it's a way better encapsulation of that fantastical land of impossibility sonic flourishes in than just Earth. a moebius strip is a neverending force, always moving forward and evolving.

when i say "zones" i personally define that as "pockets of heightened reality" - places built on ideas, architecture, biomes etc from our world but could never exist therein. impossible structures that bend a knee to the game design without *completely* throwing geography and intrigue out the window

crossworlds is the first piece of modern sonic media to give us a huge new array of Zones - not just new places in general, but ZONES - in like 10+ years and that's something i very much appreciate

i think the consequence of pixar being so influential to the medium *and* financially successful is everyone's been spending the last like 20 years copying them (or shoving it in the Slop Machine) to the point that "looks like pixar" doesn't mean anything anymore. in some cases it's an insult

nintendo putting out a short film tech demo to be all like "look at our new in-house CG studio that can do visuals comparable to pixar" would've been really impressive in like 2016 but it's 2025 and a film animated in blender won an oscar last year

maybe my brain has just been expanded too much by ring racers and the emphasis it put on the nuance of item play in accordance to its gameplay goals and i can't go back to your average licensed Mario Kart Homework Copier anymore

combine that with all of said items having a several-seconds-long animation before they activate and it gives the game this real oppressive feeling sometimes where the player has no agency in dealing with problems beyond the incredibly static query of "Do You Have A Wisp? Yes or No"

it's not enough that there are at least 3 items that can all be summed up as "Person A presses the item button and Person B stops moving for a few seconds" it needs to be accompanied with an ambulance siren. i know mario kart has an item warning sound too but it's not nearly as high pitched

they get all tied up in a knot trying to justify their kowtowing to the groyper breeding grounds because they can't fathom that they might be A Bad Person. that minority friends aren't just NPCs that exist in the background of their lives, they have to use their privelege to stand up for them
