"It's so soft," is murmured breathily, a little hitch between words. The boy pets him as his breath calms. "I wish I had fur..."

The boy turns to him, red eyed and snotty nosed.

"Your eyes are so pretty when you're a wolf."

And Eddie's tail thumps wildly once more.

His mother did not hug him much but she would curl around him and lick his face.

He knows enough not to lick the boys face but he curls their bodies together, holding him nervously.

Slowly, the cries soften and fall and fade. And hands reach around to touch the fur on his arms, around his face.

"There," he says uncomfortably, when his teeth have sharpened and his ears transform, flicking toward and away from the hiccups and cries.

His fingers end in short claws now. But he reaches out anyway, uncertainly reaching for the boy to pull him in and wrap his arms around him.

Uncomfortable, Eddie makes him close his eyes. Which isnt hard because of the crying

But he's never shifted in front of someone he's not related to, and its embarrassing to be seen in the half dozen states between boy and wolf-boy. Especially when his hairless boy form made someone break into tears

Because The Boy /cries/ when he comes to school the next day, horrified by his /skin/, pale and hairless and asking through shaking sobs if his tail got /cut off/.

"What!" Eddie huffs. "No!"

But the boy won't stop crying, wailing hard enough that Eddie worries he might throw up

His uncle Wayne is shocked when he finally leaves his room for dinner.

"Are you sure?" He asks gruffly. "No one can make ya kid. No matter what they say."

"Yeah," Eddie shrugs and gets to relearning how to hold a fork and sit on a chair and eat dinner without another word.

After a week of this, he looks at his claws, his pointy ears, his fangs, his fur.

Dark fur like his mothers.

She was beautiful with big golden eyes and sharp fangs and the pack they lived in when he was young rarely left the forest.

Then he had to live in a city. And wolves dont live in cities.

No matter what he does, hovering nearby wagging his tail, jogging close and then dashing away, dropping sticks and kickballs by him and freezing with anticipation for him to take it so Eddie can take it back and then the boy could take it from /him/, nothing seems to work.

The boy just /stares/

And Eddie, well, he just can't stop thumping his tail with reckless abandon whenever the boy version of the wolf he's sure he played with in the woods looks his way. His friend maybe, could be, might be. His first friend.

He vibrates whenever the boy is near. Slumping when the boy looks away.
