U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) says he has been denied 4 times to see what is going on inside the Broadview, IL ICE facility:

"Something's going on in there that they don't want us to see. I don't know what it is, but all Americans should be asking the same question."

Neighbor shielded 7-year-old during South Shore federal raid: ‘I didn’t want them to take her’ via @chicago.suntimes.com
Amid the smoke bombs and screams that ricocheted throughout a South Shore building last month during a massive military-style immigration raid, one man heard a knock on his door.

On the other side was a mom and her seven-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
News clip reading:
“I wasn’t planning on letting her stay, but I didn’t know what the hell was going on,” the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.

I'm at the scene where ICE abducted multiple people from Lincoln and Foster this morning.

A WGN producer was among the people taken, allegedly because she was among a group of bystanders who tried to intervene. ICE agents hit this car while making their getaway.

When my daughter's school went into lockdown over ICE reports yesterday, another local parent told me that volunteers were immediately on scene to offer support. (lockdown was quickly lifted, with no notable activity).

It's really striking how many people in Chicago seem to be visibly engaged. As teenagers stream into school, speaking a mix of languages, I notice adults with their orange whistles strolling the neighborhood and scanning cars.

I know a lot of people are still absorbing judge Perry's order against national guard deployment in Illinois. A couple things to keep in mind:

Looks like we didn't have to wait for tomorrow for the written order: bsky.app/profile/jons...

U.S. District Judge April Perry's temporary restraining order is in:

The Trump admin is also expected to appeal. Govt. counsel even asked Perry for an administrative stay on the order pending appeal, which the judge didn't grant.

This will probably soon end up before the 7th Circuit appellate court - which has a fair share of conservative judges.

For one, this is a *temporary restraining order.* it expires in two weeks, hence why Perry ordered a hearing on its possible extension on Oct. 22. It's not a permanent injunction on national guard federalization / deployment in Illinois.

It's also unclear to me how IL and Chicago plan to enforce the order, other than expecting the Trump admin to abide by it in good faith.

Other reporters and I asked IL Attorney General Kwame Raoul about enforcement after the court hearing, and he mostly sidestepped giving a substantive answer.

Reports of ICE presence is notable. But the scale of response from neighbors, just showing up-- is also pretty striking.

Signs of the times in Chicago today: My daughter's school went on soft lockdown because of reports of ICE. Volunteers showed up at the nearby H.S. to escort people who didn't feel safe. Walking around, I saw lots of orange whistles around people's necks.

Some very notable aspects of the temporary retraining order in the case regarding protests at the Broadview ICE facility just outside Chicago, including rules about officers having visible identification and protections for journalist.
