I can imagine. I should've said: I loved the quip, but regret the truth behind it :(

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

UNC is one of the brightest spots in LIS and nothing I have read about this forced merger makes me feel like decisionmakers care.

They're jumping onto a bandwagon, hoping to "career readiness" HE, and are willing to ruin the reputation of everyone involved to make conservative politicos happy.

he says science disinformation is driven by the "Five Ps": plutocrats, petrostates, publicists, and passive press, which is kind of a lame way to get to 5, especially when Penn provosts is right there...

Now just a minute here.

So this guy was a vice-provost at Penn, and dropped that position because he couldn’t speak truthfully on matters of science in that role at Penn. But he’s staying on, at Penn.

Seems to me that if this is how Penn operates then everything about it is poisoned.

These jobs often go to the poor sap who draws the short stick… or the junior person who’s bullied into it :)

I don’t mean to minimize his sacrifice, but seriously: stepping down from an admin position — at a uni where the rite of passage into admin is soul desiccation — isn’t exactly heroism. I remember when a student congratulated me on my directorship. I had to explain: thanks, but this is not an honor 😉

Paul Ingrassia, Trump’s nominee to lead the office investigating Jack Smith, has recently been investigated for harassing a colleague, Politico reports.

“Eventually the woman discovered that Ingrassia had arranged ahead of time to have her hotel room canceled so she would have to stay with him..”

In late July, Paul Ingrassia, the White House liaison for the Department of Homeland Security, arrived at a Ritz-Carlton in Orlando with a lower-ranking female colleague and others from their department. When the group reached the front desk, the woman learned she didn't have a hotel room.
Ingrassia then informed her that she would be staying with him, according to five administration officials familiar with the episode. Eventually the woman discovered that Ingrassia had arranged ahead of time to have her hotel room canceled so she would have to stay with him, three of those officials said.

Perry asks the govt's counsel if they would potentially seek to send other state's national guard to Illinois if she used narrower language for the restraining order.

Counsel says yes.

"Ok, then I'm gonna go with the broader language," Perry says.

my institution is also going in this direction. alums and current students got a survey over the summer asking us to pick the new name for the (already merged) compsci/datasci/infosci school, most of them mentioned AI, zero mentioned libraries

They’re targeting New York Attorney General Letitia James for one reason: she had the courage to hold Donald Trump accountable.

This is political weaponization of our courts, plain and simple—and proof that when you stand up to corruption, they come for you.

Letitia James is a former public defender and public advocate. She's spent most of her career on the side of the marginalized and underprivileged. And let's be honest: Trump is attacking her because he doesn't want Black women in positions of authority in this country.

I’m not autistic, just a parent to an autistic kid w/ fairly significant support needs, but I personally find it very frustrating to see so many people fixated on preventing, reducing, or “curing” autism and neurodiversity instead of talking about inclusion + getting folks whatever support they need

I almost feel guilty celebrating good things amidst such widespread atrocity, but I just have to acknwldg what a gift it is to be teaching back in this city: it feels so meaningful; the vibe is so good (…and I feel so satisfyingly *competent*, after 3yrs of feeling like a failure in the wrong place)
