6/6 The goal is to strengthen the computational psychiatry's capacity to address the social aspects of mental health -- ideally leading to better explanations, predictions, & interventions with regards to the interpersonal facets of psychiatric disorders.
shawnrhoadsphd.com
5/6 We also advocate for more rigorous task designs: including non-social controls, considering whether tasks really require social cognition, and using ecologically valid interactions to bridge findings in the laboratory with real-world social experiences.
shawnrhoadsphd.com
4/6 This is also not about committing to specialized neural function or architecture. It is more about building/testing theory-driven computational models that capture social cognitive processes when our questions are about socially-relevant symptoms.
shawnrhoadsphd.com
3/6 We propose building models that explicitly capture social cognition (such as inferring others' beliefs, emotions, and intentions) along with contextual factors like fairness norms or controllability, while also incorporating domain-general processes like attention biases or prediction errors.
shawnrhoadsphd.com
2/6 Symptoms like social avoidance, mistrust, callousness, and paranoia are about other people. Yet many current models are based on non-social tasks, risking the loss of key features needed to understand how people actually reason about others.

1/6 Excited to see our NMH paper featured here for #WorldMentalHealthDay! rdcu.be/dYl7T

Many psychiatric symptoms are inherently social. @xiaosigu.bsky.social, @joebarnby.com, & I call for cognitive models that reflect processes most relevant to our questions, esp. for those about social symptoms🧵

🚨To celebrate #WorldMentalHealthDay, our October issue includes a Focus that examines the advances in computational psychiatry and the challenges of developing computational models to address mental health disorders. #mentalhealthresearch #Psychiatry

Do you ever wish you could just use python to pull together the files and code for running FSL's randomise? Me too! I made this: github.com/jmumford/ran... It will even replace the numbers in the file outputs with contrast names of your choosing (and replace corrp with 1minusp).
