and if you're really buying the curvature description, then it doesn't actually matter if the ball stretches the trampoline down or up! the curvature is the same either way.

but this is also why my biggest problem with the "ball on trampoline" model is that it almost *does* work as a description of curvature... but you have to understand this weird thing about how stretching space like that affects straight lines

now let's go back to relativity. imagine something has "stretched" an area of space around it, so that it has more "space". if we're drawing a trajectory that passes nearby, the edge on the outside is going to have to be "longer" to compensate for the inside going through an area with more space.

another thought about curved spacetime: one way of defining a "straight line" is this: think about the line as having a very narrow width, and ask "are the left sides and the right sides the same length?". if they're the same, the line is straight; if they're different, the line must be curved.

"you should only use the repost/boost feature at most once per week" is not a hill I would die on, but I would set up shop there/loiter/get passive aggressive when told to leave/return at night when nobody is there/lie down right there on my hill/watch the leonids dart across the sky/look at them go/can you imagine being a tiny grain of dust/existence coming to an end in a single flash/must be what it's like to die on a hill/but me, myself...
