UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Neoliberal late capital hegemony Jiu-Jitsued us into both of these memes at once, is what I'm saying I guess:
Kelsey Atherton tweet saying "Oh, you're experiencing a structural problem? Have you ever considered trying different personal choices instead?" Meme where a chud asks a guy "LGBTQ rights or economic stability?" and our king responds "Both?"

That it was shallow and performative at best, and at worst shifted responsibility for structural inequality onto individuals while positioning marginalized groups as aligned to capital and in opposition to the "white working class"
shookegg.bsky.social
But this was the leftist critique of neoliberal DEI that mainstream culture just glossed over for the past decade:
shookegg.bsky.social
(imo it's probably not nothing, but not close to enough to balance the simultaneous harm politicians, corporations, et al. were simultaneously doing to those same communities, nevermind contributing to this backlash)
shookegg.bsky.social
Of course how much those neoliberal DEI initiatives *actually* benefited marginalized communities is irrelevant
shookegg.bsky.social
It seems like some people earnestly thought rolling back trans rights or getting rid of black managers will bring back prosperity somehow? Others just figured "they benefited at my expense so now I want to hurt them in retaliation"
shookegg.bsky.social
But blue collar workers see this happen, and from there it's easier for the real fascists to argue that blue collar immiseration is inextricably linked to LGBTQ+ rights, BIPOC advancement, etc. This is a deliberate strategy for the far right, but some people earnestly seem to believe it
shookegg.bsky.social
Neoliberal DEI is packaged with neoliberal economics as a way to have something to point to that says "see, things are getting better, you can't complain" without having to actually address the systemic rot or endanger shareowners
shookegg.bsky.social
KKR pride logos, pronouns in emails, even corporate DEI trainings are relatively cheap ways to assuage the guilt of mildly conscious PMC types and virtue signal while reframing systemic issues (caused or exacerbated by these same corporations!) into personal challenges
shookegg.bsky.social
To the extent that there's any "there" there in the popularist antiwoke crackdown beyond old-school patriarchal racism it really seems like empty neoliberal DEI really served to align marginalized identities with late capitalist exploitation in the white working class and petite bourgeoisie
shookegg.bsky.social
As a neutral observer, this seems cruel
