This is one of my favorite simple soups because it has five ingredients you might even have around, takes about 30 minutes to make, and tastes incredibly rich for something so light and simple.

It's my favorite time of the year in the Northeast -- crisp air, leaves in every color, and, most importantly, it's finally butternut squash and caramelized onion galette season. It's my every-October-without-fail thing, and I hope you make it yours too.

Lemony, light and ever-so-crisp at the edges, these ricotta pancakes are finished with sauéed apples and I can hardly express how little I’d mind if someone came over and made them for me right now.

Thank you! And btw, we were recently on the Judge John Hodgman podcast together talking about comfort food, if you want to listen.

This pizza is covered with only potatoes, onion, olive oil, salt, and pepper but tastes like so much more than the sum of its parts. It goes spectacularly with a big spring salad and a crisp glass of wine. Oh, and it looks and tastes kinda like potato chips.

Thank you. Sadly, probably not any time soon. We are both in the throes of our next books and they won’t be done for a while.

This week's Weekly Yap, my not-strictly-cooking newsletter, is, in fact, full of cooking — ideas for vegetarian Thanksgiving mains, what to serve with soup, my forever favorite kitchen towels, two excellent meals out, and a few things I made for dinner.

This cake tastes like a glazed apple cider doughnut and will make your kitchen smell like fall blew up (gently, aromatically) in it, but is secretly even more magical: it’s naturally dairy- and egg-free.

For this bleary weather outside, a cozy chicken noodle soup with buoyant, tender meatballs, all of the noodles your heart desires (ours desire a lot) and a speed of assembly impressive even for a weeknight.

Cubes of sweet potatoes roasted with so much spice, it almost forms a crust, atop a schmear of refried black beans, finished with lime, avocado, and more make for easy (vegan), hearty and flavorful weeknight tacos.

New: A stacked, striped, and I think quite dapper dessert with thin almond cake layers soaked in espresso, chocolate ganache, and an astoundingly delicious espresso buttercream. This is one of my favorite cakes on earth and I hope you fall in love with it too.

Today's SK Digest is full of my favorite things to cook in October, from a favorite roasted cabbage to the best apple crumb cake on earth. Even better, we have an interview with Hetty Lui McKinnon, whose new cookbook, Linger is out tomorrow.

A one-pan lemon chicken with potatoes and chickpeas perfect for right now. The chicken thighs are bronzed and crisp; the roasted potatoes and chickpeas infuse with the lemony onion and garlic drippings. It's perfect.

Just saw this comment on Threads! “You can swap in maple sugar for the brown sugar. It gives it a slightly denser flavor.”

The best peanut butter cookies I’ve ever made have only five ingredients, no flour, no butter, can be mixed by hand in one bowl, and have a perfect salty finish. Thank you, @ovenly!

This is one of my favorite pasta bakes of all time: craggy with browned crunchy edges for miles, sausage, and broccoli rabe, and a lightly creamy pecorino sauce to hold it all together.

What? Rude. I’m pretty sure I pinned it to @smittenkitchen there, will take a look.

Let me tell you how little my friends and family minded while I reworked and updated these 2012 pumpkin cinnamon buns this fall. They're now better than ever -- bigger, gorgeously spiraled with cinnamon sugar, tender, and devastatingly delicious.

A heartier, easier take on the flavors of eggplant parmesan -- cozy and decadent, but not in a way that puts you immediately to sleep. You'll want to double this; you'll thank you later.

In today's Weekly Yap, my not-strictly-cooking newsletter, I'm sharing notes and favorites from a long weekend in Nice, why I prefer baking with cheap butter, and what I've been making this week.

It's time! 🍂 In the Smitten Kitchen, October 1st is the opening day of Pumpkin Bread Season and this is my forever one-can, one-bowl recipe, which towers with a crisp cinnamon-sugar lid that's impossible not to pick off in deeply satisfying bark-like flecks.

An Eastern European savory flatbread smothered in onions and poppy seeds with the classic chew and crisp of focaccia is a cinch to make and serve with cream cheese, lox and all the good stuff. Your kitchen is going to smell otherworldly.

A peak fall apple and cheddar crisp salad in which I share three tricks to make the kind of fancy, cool, crunchy, dynamic, and gorgeous salads I can never resist on a restaurant menu at home with little fuss for so much less. I'm obsessed.

If you haven't fallen in love with chocolate babka yet, the only reason could be that you haven't tried it. Start here, but don't be intimidated; they're not half as complicated as they look. Even the messiest twists still bake into deeply, bronzed loaves.
