Do I know anyone who would be willing to a) share a successful post doc research proposal for an English Lit project in the UK system with me and/or b) would be willing to look at a draft proposal when I have it done? (Ahead of some deadlines next week and also later this month)
10 minutes into my mental health/ concentration walk and I’ve already said hello to four cats.
I’m seeing Red AND white poppies in the Green Party videos today.

That should confuse the press and the flag obsessives.
If your progressive politics isn’t intersectional it’s probably bollocks.
I may be being obtuse here - but class *is* an identity. Like other identities it has a basis in material and physical realities. Like other identities it’s mutable. There are no simple definitions of it.

And (and I say this pointedly) it’s absolutely something that people self-identify.
The other thing is that you are supposed to let compressors (including fridges) stand for 24 hours after they’ve been transported.
I said β€œno” to installation (because you basically just have to plug it in) *but* this meant that they just left it in the packaging and I had to get a neighbour to come and help me unbox it.

I always pay to get them to take the old one (if there is one) away for recycling.
I appreciate its frustrating but you are almost always dealing at least initially with someone who has absolutely no power to change the process, isn’t being listened to and (in the case of the right to work check part) risks getting fired if they don’t follow the process.
I have noticed an uptick in emails about information that could quite easily have been found with a quick Google search (and a little bit of what used to be common sense about which link to click on).

People have always done this. But it’s getting worse again.
I find out on Thursday if I’m being set free. πŸ™ƒ

In the UK we are thankfully more easily able to compensate research subjects/ participants.
I hate it. I try to make it as streamlined as possible and do it as quickly as possible (in systems that absolutely suck). I get people being really quite rude to me when I’m doing my best. I now apologise up front and explain the need for checks to ensure that we can continue to sponsor students.
If you are prepared to throw anyone’s human rights under a bus you can’t really call yourself progressive.

Trans rights are human rights.
Universities are particularly paranoid and bureaucratic about RTW checks because their right to sponsor student visas is at risk if they get it wrong.

And losing your status as a sponsor is an institution ending event.
If anyone wants an already up and running test case for the insanity that already is right to work checks - just ask anyone who works for a university and has the godawful task of trying to pay people for things like one off guest lectures and external examining.
Interesting factlets about Digital ID...

Government is proposing a massive extension of right to work checks, to sweep up not just employees but all individuals providing services otherwise than to consumers. So the whole gig economy and even including eg barristers (shock!)... /1
But it’s probably far too pragmatic and not victim blamy enough for our current overlords.
I also absolutely can’t square the Government’s approach to Covid vaccination with the amount of time they spend wanging on about more people needing disabled benefits. Or amount of shouting about the cost to the NHS of obesity etc.

Do the easy preventative stuff. Vaccines & clean air.
All the evidence suggests that the long term outlook of repeat infections is *nothing good*.
I also, selfishly, really want to reduce the chances of getting it again. Two bouts have already knocked chunks off my ability to recover/extend fitness and stamina. I know enough people with ME/CFS and Long-Covid to know that nobody wants that.

And fuck knows what long term damage Covid does.
All NHS workers with patient contact should be getting it to reduce transmission to patients. I’ve already had to deal with one parent getting it in hospital.

I’ve just booked mine for the end of next week because I neither want it again nor do I want to infect my +++ frail parents.
I would like a job where I spend 50% less time

- following up multiple times with everyone about everything.
- dealing with queries about shoddy systems that I’m not responsible for.

I fully accept that all jobs require a certain amount of this. I’m not expecting none of this. Just…less.
Well I have booked a Covid jab. My step count is totally taking a hit what with the niggly knee.

I’m trying to reframe probably feeling quite shitty the day afterwards as an opportunity for sensory rest.

People who say Zack Polanski is the same as Nigel Farage, will vote for Nigel Farage.

Just as they did for Boris Johnson.

Coffee is motivating not just because of its caffeine but because it is nice, nicer than the news, nicer than the weather, nicer than being yelled at, nicer than the polarised horrors of the internet.
Cuddling the dog is a sensible response to pretty much anything though. 😊
