Oh absolutely. There's an underlying -ism to it, somewhere between xenophobia, superiority complex, circlejerk behavior, and huffing one's own fumes that facilitated this. It's still lingering here and there, but I do distinctly remember exactly what you're talking about.

Some people in the modern era also just hate old tropes like random encounters and grinding for XP and game overs with no autosave, and these are things still largely associated with the genre, but that's less of a point than the anti-anime thing imo.

I think a general disdain for "anime" art style of JRPGs was definitely part of it. People see a vaguely Japanese art style and either associate it with children's cartoons (or porn) and dismiss it immediately.

Short attention spans and the need to sportify games were probably also involved.
