Va reminded me something unusual happened while I photographed the storm. I grew up in Va and remember seeing countless lightning bugs on summer nights. As it got dark, I started seeing lightning bugs flying around! Very rare here in NM and most of the West.

Early August supercell storm on the plains near Roy, New Mexico. I had the fortune to watch this storm build through the late afternoon and put on a magnificent light show for more than an hour after sunset. It’s beautiful, and so is Molly’s home, located about a mile away. Just to clarify, Molly was a guest at the hotel; it wasn’t named after her. The hotel was named after its founder, Henry C. Brown, in the early 1890s.

Coming home tonight after an afternoon of chasing thunderstorms near Socorro, New Mexico. Lots of hail and rain, but few bolts. The afternoon still had its reward. This scene is unfolded over the Isleta Pueblo.
