I think sadly though, this kinda had an effect on Modern Transformers series sadly toning down a lot of the inherent japanese mecha stuff that was always in Transformers's DNA from the start back in the 80s. Which is a shame because thats the era of Transformers I grew up with.

Granted, Armada and Energon in particular were a bit of a mess, but that didn't mean they deserved to be the poster childs for how racist things got. The entire TFwiki used to be very in on "look how weird these anime tropes are". (Thankfully that's started to be cleared up now.)

It was equal parts weird curioisty because Japan had actually had their own exclusive Transformers series that spun out of G1 and beast wars and also racist cringe because they didn't like how "Anime" Armada and its following shows were.

While this isn't a Power Rangers thing per se (aside from the two franchises now owned by the same company), the biggest example that comes to mind is how western Transformers fans saw the japanese side of the franchise.

The Neo-Saban era was basically only successful because they REALLY went in hard on the MMPR Nostalgia (which isn't THAT bad of a thing) and that's what kept the brand alive for the next decade or so.

Like, Dragon Knight came out the same time as RPM, the last of the disney era power rangers series, a season that technically wasn't supposed to exsist because Disney didn't know what the fuck to DO with Power Rangers anymore. (Small miracle that season became one of the best ones).

Sure, Toei in particular has been iffy about releasing their toku stuff in the west (and apparently, part of that is because the really popular seasons of kamen rider are priced really high to lisence), but the fact is they probably wouldn't have done this like ten years ago. Yet times have changed.

It kinda just... speaks to the fact that world in general is a lot more culturally aware and open about these things now. That and stuff from other countries is just a lot more accessible now.

No one is wanting to hack up japanese shows and splice in american actors anymore. No one is wanting to censor the hell out of anime to erase all the japanese cultural bits. Most anime dubs are pretty much faithful as hell these days with little to no changes.

I am looking forward to finally watching Kamen Rider Dragon Knight at some point because I heard that was pretty good... but I think the reason that Kamen Rider never took off was because even when Dragon Knight got made... american toku stuff was dying out.

I think it's because of just the simple fact that outside of Godzilla and Power Rangers (and even for the latter, they americanised the hell out of it), America still had a big long stink of "japan weird" for a very long time.
