— they were such good friends.

“Yeah, so,” he leaned forward with a furrowed brow and steepled hands. “Who were you fighting in my atmosphere? And why were you fighting them *here?*”

Not that Solas wasn’t glad to see his friend, but being caught up in the middle of one of Lep’s wild adventures —

— He chuckled. “Of course your robot brain couldn’t perceive me as a threat. I’m just too nice and sunshine-y!”

He was sure that Lep’s robotic subconscious had just made a quick scan of his physical abilities and quickly deemed him harmless, but it was a nice thought that perhaps it was because —

Solas had set Lep up in his tiny, narrow bed. Just as soon as he’d fluffed the pillows, that was when Lep decided to wake up.

Solas gave a start when he sat up so suddenly, though he was relieved that Lep hadn’t been out for too long. He had no idea how to babysit a cyborg in stasis.

+ space combat. I tried to override it by telling it there were still enemies nearby, but I couldn't convince it that YOU were an enemy."

A forced chuckle, and a grumble of his still-all-too-organic stomach.

"Anyway, sorry about literally dropping in unannounced. I'll answer any questions."

— with you sometime,” he said, sounding a little nervous. “But I don’t know if I could go back there. They’ll throw me in prison and set an execution date within the hour we arrive. And… I’m a little terrified of what we’ll find there otherwise.”

Solas supposed she had a point. Of course Maggie had dealt with her fair share of shitty personalities. Rol Rhosan elves were tricky, but likely not much worse than anything else she’d seen.

Suggesting that Solas might accompany her for the journey made his cheeks flush.

“I- I’d love to travel —

for me, even though they had only just met me. I would be quite the hypocrite if I didn't return the favor." Maggie smiled warmly. "And I could think of much worse company to travel with to get there."

— speaking to them. Surely, they weren’t doing anything wrong, right?

“We’re just walking along the road,” Solas explained, clinging to Kal’s neck as if that was the only stable thing he could find. “Same as you.”
sunsetsol.bsky.social
For a moment, Solas was entranced. Kal had caught him far before he even neared the ground. But now they were on the ground, as if he’d been imagining things. Maybe he wasn’t as high in the tree as he thought?

He only had a moment to look up at Kal with starry eyes before the king’s guard was —

But maybe not in time, as they land, six men upon horses begin to come into view.

Each of them in red stained armor, with silver helmets adoring King Zod’s powerful house sigil. “Halt.” One says. “What goes on here?”
sunsetsol.bsky.social
— better judgement, Solas dropped from the branch with a terrified little yelp. On the way down, he prayed that Kal really would catch him. If he’d done it once, surely he could do it again?
sunsetsol.bsky.social
“Fuck,” he muttered to himself, shifting uncomfortably in the tree. Falling had been one thing, but jumping on purpose?

The ground seemed to tilt in front of him. What if Kal didn’t catch him?

The panicked look on Kal’s face suggested that they couldn’t afford to waste any time. So, against his —

“Yes.” Kal says, motioning quickly —- the sound of armor and horses coming quicker and closer. Like he could feel the breath of the rider upon his neck.

“Quickly, Solas —- Jump! Jump, I’ve got you!”

— down either side of the road to see if they were close. If Kal could hear them, surely they’d be just around the corner.

-- "Come on, BB," he said. "We should get him out of the elements."

Solas heaved a sigh. He was glad that Lep was fine, and that his beepy little robot brain had just put him asleep for repairs. But that didn't mean he was going to let Lep wake up alone in the forest.

Pulling by his armpits, Solas began dragging Lep away from the pond and toward his house.

It got his nerves buzzing to plan a real heist with someone far more --

Solas gave a nervous chuckle. "You know as well as I do, there's no controlling Fleet. But I'll do my best."

He appreciated that Olympia was willing to overlook her own reservations to include Solas in their mission, but there was no time for showing gratitude. He turned to Fleet.

"The place --

Solas froze, looking at Kal with eyes of urgency and fear. He’d heard vague stories of the local king’s new surveillance measures, none of them with good endings. Particularly for his fellow petty thieves.

“Shit, I- I’m too high to jump. Could you catch me again?” he whispered quickly, glancing —

Swords, the clattering of metal, the movement of breath. No, travelers maybe, but their intentions lay with aggression.

“Solas we should go. It’s Peacemakers. Hired goons by the crown, they don’t care who you are —-.”

“I am being-!” Solas started to protest, but he frowned when he saw his new friend glancing around.

“Not usually. This isn’t a main passage through the forest. You think it’s another traveler?”

Yet, the idea was intriguing. If anyone could find answers for him, it’d be Maggie.

When Maggie offered to travel to Rol Rhosa, Solas’s head shot back up to look at her with fear and excitement swirling in his eyes.

“You’d go there for me? You’re serious? I… It feels selfish to ask that of you. The Elves there are rude and —

Solas dropped his head. It was annoying when she was right. His intention was to put his old life behind him, to never look back. But at this point, he’d been avoiding everyone he used to love.

Based on what Maggie had said before, he was already planning on writing a letter to Lia. But now he —

"I could travel to your home and inquire?" she mused.
