on the whole, writing for programmers is a deeply frustrating exercise

they read essays like they're a compiler, stopping at the first word they don't understand and spitting out error messages

one of the reasons i gave up trying to write technical blog posts on the regular was that no matter how hard i tried to write something like "don't do this. it's bad" "here is the bad thing and the bad consequences" someone would reply "great post: i also love doing the bad thing, thanks!"

i still think about the talk i went to where some guy said "competition produced better results" and the actual paper he linked to said "produced more entrants but less quality results than the collaborative approaches"

and it's just, yeah people are vibe reading stuff all the time

i think my favourite thing on a blog post is clicking on a citation and finding out it says almost the exact opposite of how it's been summarised

in this instance it was titled "learning should be uncomfortable" and it's a study arguing for teaching people the rationale before the mechanism

if you can find a wooden spoon, you can use the tip of the handle to push down on the marble, which will be a little less painful but probably just as frustrating as using your hands
tef.bsky.social
i have managed to open one with my hands before, sans opener, but i would not recommend it as a means of opening

you just have to push the marble in, but it does not ease open, it will re-seal itself if you do not push it far enough out

yeah i figured a fifteen minute video is just too much video for an aside comment

honestly after 40% of people left it should be called 22signals

also, who called it "omarchy" and not "arch nemesis"
tef.bsky.social
ahem: who called it the eye candy window manager of choice for neo reactionaries and not the dark enlightenment

someone later pointed out to me that the attack on an mst is to not create any items with leading 0's, thus forcing a larger and larger node, rather than making a big tree

i tried watching doctor who for a year just because all of my friends wouldn't shut up about it, and it was nice having something to talk about but couldn't really get into it

sports is (1) we watch the same sport (2) wear the same uniform (3) are in the same place and time, and so you have an instant peer group for a few fleeting hours

and maybe a little interaction now and then outside the game with people at work

sport is a social contract of sorts, a means of relating to strangers, albeit temporarily

my usual rubric is "three things in common", or why if you're outside the bar (1) smoking (2) and not allowed inside (3), it's suddenly much easier to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger
