Thank you! and indeed; it is astounding how there is no oversight or regulation.

"There’s really barely any evidence that shows that [AI therapy chatbots] are in fact effective...We do not have longitudinal studies that look at people with diagnosis of mental disorders who did not have any other kind of help, who used these chatbots, and can say that they benefited from these.”
thebusyowl.bsky.social
"Plus, many studies are being conducted by the companies who are trying to sell their product, which is a “research integrity and conflict of interest issue,” Tekin notes."
thebusyowl.bsky.social
“Most of the studies, however, aren’t without limitations. So far, much of the current research on AI chatbots for mental health support has been non-randomized, non-controlled, and small in sample size, says Şerife Tekin"

Emerged from my plague and made it to campus to be greeted by apples and this lovely recognition from my students, who declared me the exceptional teacher of the month. I love their comments, especially the part about my gusto 😂

Many thanks to @thebusyowl.bsky.social for her wonderful Centre for Ethics in Public Life (CEPL) Annual Lecture yesterday, and to everyone who attended and participated in the discussion. A recording of the lecture will be posted online soon.
Two women standing in front of a lectern. One is reading from a text in front of her, the other is smiling and looking at the camera. There is a slide in the background that says ‘Bridging Science and Testimony: The Multitudinous Self Model for a Humanist Psychiatry’ and a picture of a book entitled RECLAIMING THE SELF IN PSYCHIATRY: Contering Personal Naratives for a Humans Science by Şerife Tekin.

I am heading to Greece now to meet up with my sisters and mom and have some off work time on the Aegean coast before I start the next bout of book touring.

The highlight of the week was @madva.bsky.social’s lecture on Bias in Medicine. Students, colleagues and I benefited tremendously from Alex’s rigorous, empirically grounded, and hope building expertise. The vibes were high! Thanks Alex!!!

Just finished the busiest, all hands on deck teaching week of the year. It went so well, felt super connected to all the 180 first year med students and taught Bioethics in the way I like doing it: lots of philosophy of science, films, first person stories, and lectures by brilliant colleagues.
thebusyowl.bsky.social
that’s terrible. I think your feelings are justified. I have a few of my own stories that involve white feminists. I now know that identifying as a feminist does not automatically make one a good feminist, or philosopher or colleague. You are good.

Alex Madva, co-author of "Someone should do something: how anyone can help create social change", most clearly articulated the connection between the problems raised by previous speakers & the tension between individual & structural frameworks

Still waiting to hear about the part in our approved proposal for Purdue's new hub for philosophy of cognitive science (the Cognition, Agency, and Intelligence Center) that would require all CAIC events to serve this specific refreshment

Soft-launching Purdue's new hub for philosophy of cognitive science (the Cognition, Agency, and Intelligence Center) with the following overly-aggressive meme, as is recommended by the university media handbook
