What appears to be happening is there have been rumors and now this seems to help confirm them.

Businessman Austin Beutner, also a former LAUSD superintendent and one time LA Times publisher, might be throwing his hat into the ring to challenge LA Mayor Karen Bass.

Hmm? What's happening here?

This has been tailor made for me!! Such a great kick-off to a wonderful series!

The LA Reporter this week is debuting The Doughnut Shop Interviews series in which we sit down with a major figure in local politics and regulars at a neighborhood doughnut shop.

The first chat is with Raymond Meza, chair a citizen panel helping to rewrite the LA city charter.
thelareporter.bsky.social
He said that changes to the charter is important because it affects city services and public spaces like parks and streets, and our quality of life. The questions to ask are, “What do you want to see your city excel at? What do you want to see be done better in [your] city?”

Meza, who was born and raised in Montecito Heights by a single mother, and spent many evenings eating dinner at his grandmother’s house in Highland Park, says they're "really a citizens commission."

Meza's day job is as deputy chief-of-staff for a labor union for janitors, nurses and city workers.

Rachel, who walked into the doughnut shop with a sleeping newborn in a carrier, says the "loudest voices" usually carry too much weight and there needs to be "appropriate times or appropriate ways to reach out to parents ... the whole community — not just like, who can make it [out to meetings]."
thelareporter.bsky.social
Manuel Berru, of El Sereno, told The LA Reporter it would “be a blessing” if the charter reform commission were able to bring accountability to the LAPD, saying “I grew up here. I see the way [the LAPD] operate ... they do what they want to do, and get away with more than they should.”

The LA Reporter spoke to Meza at Monterey Donut, a beloved local spot in northeast Los Angeles where patrons greet the owner, Mrs. Lee, like their friend or family member.

Some grew up or spent years going to her shop, with one couple saying they spent one of their anniversaries there.

Blink and you might have missed it.

Erroll Southers, a controversial appointment to the LAPD commission, was approved by the LA City Council today.

But it was done in an unusual way -- it was allowed to run out the clock by the council failing to do anything by today's deadline to act on.
