the invasion of Afghanistan is among the most horrific recent chapters of the long history of elite impunity in the US. this coda is grim but fitting - the govt practically explicitly affirming that it should only be Afghans who live with the consequences amid fading public memory of the atrocity
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

No idea why an Afghan refugee shot National Guard soldiers within walking distance of the White House, but this new USCIS directive was revealed on Monday. Worth noting.
The folks at @afghanevac.bsky.social have in hand a new USCIS directive which largely targets Afghan refugees who fled the Taliban in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal in 2021.

In case you needed a reminder that the most loathsome people in the world work for DHS.

Council’s got two real powers: budget and (now reduced but still significant) upzoning/downzoning.

This is a pretty clear coalition on anti-property tax + pro-NYPD-spending + anti-major-upzoning

My bet is we get a ‘stasis’/member deference Council

As always, the solution to this is more loading zones so trucks can pull over and not block traffic but that takes parking so it’s impossibke to tell if the bike lane opponents are arguing in good faith or not.

Nick Garber is reporting that Julie Menin - the only anti-Mamdani speaker candidate - currently has 36 pledged supporters.

If your council member is on the list of supporters, I encourage you to call them immediately and tell them to support Crystal Hudson or Amanda Farias.

Menin is Upper East Side & has been as close to a Republican vote on the council as one can get without caucusing with them. Her district, at least, has the agenda of destroying all nice outdoor urban things & increasing violent policing. Bad stuff.
The New York City Council speaker race seems to be over.

Council Member Julie Menin announced that 36 of the City Council's 51 members are supporting her for speaker. (You need 26 votes to be speaker.)

Menin is a moderate who's expected to serve as a check on Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

To be clear, this criticism is for me too. I only learned about the mass deportation of Haitians under Biden in the last few months, since I started covering ICE flights. I don’t recall hearing about it when it happened in September 2021, and I worked at WaPo at the time and was reading news all day

This is appalling and wrong.

AND, Biden deported Haitians to similar conditions throughout his term, including 20,000 people in a single month on 193 flights, which was until recently the record.

Fight for these human beings, and keep fighting for them if/when the Dems return to power.
DHS has announced the end of temporary immigration protections for Haitians.

The decision, effective Feb. 3, 2026, affects up to more than a half million Haitians. They now face returning to a country plagued by criminal gangs that control all major roads into the capital Port-au-Prince.

The Department of Homeland Security said TPS for Haiti ends Feb. 3, 2026, affecting over half a million people who may face return to gang-controlled Port-au-Prince.

For at least a year, I've been returning to the question, how would you know when it's time to leave the US?
