Found some assignment work I was doing when I worked on my art degree from around 2017! #graphite #contourdrawing #art

A contour drawing of a hand, palm down, with a multi-petalled flower resting on the top of the hand. The drawing was done with one line, the pen never leaving the paper. Then, after, line weight was added to define petals and parts of the hand. Drawn with my right hand while balancing the flower on my left.

A gloomy and surreal graphite drawing. The scene was drawn from life, a student lounge at Wake Technical Community College's North Campus. In the scene, the environment is drawn to be unsettling and dark. Overhead, shadowed forms of people float stiffly in the air, facing different directions and showing no sign of movement. One body in front of a window shows a haze about it in the stark white glow from outside the windows.
Nothing can be seen outside in the white glow, but there are multiple black handprints scattered over the glass of the doors and windows.

It's light and focuses on propatagium, something that I often found missing when working on client designs.

The image shows oversimplified and idealised wings. Great for some fantasy settings but the bone structure is totally awry.

This image focuses on the leading edge of the wing - the propatagium. It's a membrane that fills the gap between the wrist and shoulder, creating a nice aerodynamic shape.

Final image shows skeletal schematic of the flying vertebrates forelimb: the bat, the bird, the pterosaur. With a funny comparison to the human hand.

First page of the tutorial. It reads: "So let's start with the thing everyone starts with, Anatomy. Because the anatomy of a wing is actually pretty hard to capture at first, it's the one thing the majority of artists get oddly, but i don't blame them!"
At the right of a simple sketch of grian with the simplified structure of the bones of a wing, it reads: "More so since it took me at least five months into my wing studies to get a glimpse on fully understanding why the better way to sketch them is with around 3-4 lines."
To the left of another coydog chibi it reads: "Let's do a little comparation here. A few years ago, my usual way to go about sketching wings (and thus, simplifying them) was this down here.
To the right of the drawn examples, it reads: "It doesn't look bad, it has a great shape and i'd say is a very great start. But comparing it to a more recent sketch... The difference is noticeable, it has a certain pattern to it, but if you asked past me to explain by it's entirety what it was, i'd only be able to make a close estimate. Which by that point i was already working on the very first pages of this tutorial so let's recap what i figured out since then."

Second page of the tutorial, at the top it says: "First, bones:"
The text reading: "A bird's wings is their arm. Its very similar to ours, in the way it folds in some similar ways and is, and many artist have illustrated that before, like here and other tutorials" points to an anatomy study between a skeletal human arm and a wing. Art by Sandy Scott. Below that there's another fursona chibi.
The next text reads: "But what many get wrong is either focusing on the similarity too much, or not knowing of the very specific limitations that separate arm from wing—as feathered wings are given shape by a membrane, formed with the help of a tendon and skin called: Patagium" Below it there's a drawn example pointing at the patagium and various wing bones examples. To the side of that it reads: "This tendon specifically goes from the shoulder to the wrist, keeping the wing in a "V" shape when open, even when it doesn't look like it. Though, depending on the type of wing, both the patagium and bone structure changes. And once you've memorized the basics of those structures and how each type changes those two factors, it gets easier to change them around."
Another chibi says "like this", speech bubble pointing at examples below. And at the right it says "References are your friends; keep them close."
Under that, it says: "But how exactly one can change the shape? The trick is visually or mentally separating the wing bones: the humerous, radious and ulna fused into one for artistic purposes, and what would be the hand + digits, which in real life are fused already. The humerous and the fused radious-ulna have an almost identical lenght, while the hand is the one to change the most in comparation (but in most birds stays in a similar lenght to the other two mentioned)."

Third page of the tutorial. It starts reading: "There's five types of wings or more formally four; the fifth type, hovering, technically falls under the high speed type. the list of types is:"
To the left is the example, to the right it reads: "Elliptical wings. Seen in birds like crows and sparrows, these wings are defined by their roundness. These are also good for quick take-offs and aerial mobility."
To the right the example, on the left reads: "High speed. One of the two pointier wing types, made to maintain speed more than anything, seen in birds like ducks and sandpipers."
The example of the next two is now over their descriptions: "Active soaring. The most narrow and pointy of wings, seen in albatross and seagulls. Pretty notorious for visually having more secondaries, and... personally speaking, the ridiculous way these close."
"Passive soaring. As the name says, for passive soaring, e.i. gliding. Seen in eagles, and usually very big, and more rectangular than the rest. These also have a kind of feather that create slots in the primaries."
Under that is shown art of a feather, from tip to half being narrower than the rest of it.
And to the left of the feather the example, under it is the description of hovering wings: "Seen in hummingbirds and swifts, these kind of wings and very unique, as they are the complete opposite of active soaring in terms of shape and feathers (and technically hummingbirds fly more closely like bugs than most other birds)"

Fourth page of the tutorial. It starts with: "This might not look like much, but besides it's use to differentiate types on references a bit easier," below two showcase photos, with a high speed and passive soaring wings, "and help with worldbuilding and character design," shown with various yellow-orange stickfigures with red wings, and a chibi on the side "with these is also easier to pose them in different angles, focusing on shape; dividing the wing on two (or more) parts guided by the bones."
Over more photos of birds with various wing types, it says: "And if you got a good eye on details, you might be wondering about certain gap seen between feathers and body." Below it, the text continues: "These examples show it. The gap is, in general, very helpful for the wing's mobility, but often visually covered by various other feathers and the body itself, so until the wing is actually moving, its not that visible."
