an obelisk appears:

it is a cylinder covered in perfect gold scales, the top of which is always just out of reach. peeling back a scale, flesh is visible beneath, bleeding and raw. blood flows out until the scale forcibly snaps back into place.

but it is too late. the gold is forever stained.
