The Corset by Laura Purcell is a Gothic novel set in the Victorian era, exploring themes of poverty, revenge, murder, and societal expectations through the two perspectives of Dorothea and Ruth. While Dorothea seeks freedom from paternal control and the expectation to be a society wife, Ruth grapples with her family's tragic decline and her own potential supernatural abilities. The story accurately captures the Victorian's fascination with death and especially, the sensationalism of death through poisoning.
