- It is legal to organize and fund protest.
- That someone organizes and funds promotion of a protest does not mean most, some, or any protesters are paid.
- Even if all protesters are paid, that is also legal
- It is good to oppose kings and fascism
- That's not what what "begs the question" means

Sean Duffy: "The No Kings protest, Maria, really frustrating. This is part of antifa, paid protesters. It begs the question who's funding it."

My kid is describing My Hero Academia to me and I keep thinking, wow that's pretty gay and Americans would freak out if an American-made show was that gay but Japanese entertainment now, just like when I was a kid, is an unchecked vector of gayness.

And it all makes me think... why the hell […]

This is a nightmare.

ICE snatches a 15-year-old, non-verbal kid with autism off the street.

His mom files a missing person's report.

It takes police six days to find him hidden in an ICE gulag.

This is a parent's worst nightmare.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Climatehistories/115360803474284652

The common thread between Musk and MBS is authoritarianism and ultraconservatism. I'm glad people are starting to make note of this.

In other news, we sometimes forget that Elon Musk did not buy Twitter on his own, but with money from Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia was already Twitter’s biggest shareholder before Musk bought it and reportedly planted engineer-spies inside the company to unmask dissidents.

After the acquisition […]

Like maybe the opposite is true of some things, such as cars. I think older people are flabbergasted that I'm still driving a car I got almost 15 years ago. It still runs fine though! Newish Toyotas are simply more reliable than that car you got back in the early 80s and was long in the tooth by […]

I'm often inclined to dismiss "they don't make things like they used to" as survivorship bias and it partly is. If you are actually using an antique, it's probably something that was high quality in the first place or something simple enough that it won't break easily (like a hand-crank ice […]

@JessTheUnstill a lot of us nerds do things we shouldn't do because it's a fun and frustrating way to lean how things work. That might include running gotosocial on your NAS. But it's so bad to *recommend* that to someone, especially in response to them e.g., not being able to find an instance […]

@futurebird I very much relate to this. I go out of my way to find people who want things I don't want anymore rather than dropping off at goodwill in hopes that it won't just end up in a landfill. I will even make a point of doing repairs on it if needed first. It makes sense environmentally […]

Spicy take:

Normal people shouldn't self host.

From an energy use perspective, the users per watt are WAY higher in a data center.

People are already awful at running patches and doing security updates.

OMG are people awful at doing backups.

From an ewaste POV, consumer electronics just […]

One practical difference between how fedi and bsky work currently, not necessarily reflective of fundamental differences in the protocols, is that curating a good feed from a new account emphasizes additive vs. subtractive curation, respectively.

Presently, you tune bsky largely by blocking and […]

Note this is also similar to pasta e fagioli aka "fazool" as they call it in NJ.

I just got confirmation from my brother he's been calling it pizza beans since around 2002, which matches my memory. I also just remembered that even prior to that, he'd sometimes make me add sauce when I made […]

Oh yeah I even have a blog post from 2020. Not quite as old as the other sources, but he even notes in the post that it's something he's been making for awhile and evolved from family recipes (not just from the Italian side of the family; the shell-a-roni is from our Dutch-American paternal […]

Haha, I just found out Luigi Mangione prefers "pizza beans" as a prison meal, which allegedly comes from a recent cookbook.

Every Italian-American has independently invented pizza beans! My brother was calling it that years before the cookbook or the blog post. It has its roots in many […]

It's international coming out day! Do what you think is right for you but also keep in mind that the closet and coming out are not real. It's may be considerably less dramatic than you were imagining because for everyone to know, you'll actually have to tell everyone.

Some people might have […]

@brighidb.bsky.social I think that includes norcal to some degree. The northern foothills of The Sierra have some notorious figures.

@mskellymhayes.bsky.social when I saw that, I thought of the MOVE bombing. They're going to bomb some random person they decided to designate as the "founder" of antifa in order to make their fairy tales of cities being war zones come true.

@brighidb.bsky.social but yeah I seem to recall those cops having literal white power gang members in their ranks. Like even more blatantly than usual.

@brighidb.bsky.social maybe it's just a conflict between the rival gangs over turf?

It's admittedly been about a decade since I got bounced out of PDX by stomp-clap-hey gentrification but I'm having a HARD time putting any stock into the "PDX cops are turning against ICE" rumor mill. Those cops were everything I feared about the CPD & LAPD but cooked down into a smaller concentrate
