New on my channel! I have made the video I have always wanted to see, about the innovative filmmaker who directed the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and captured many millennials of a certain age. & the box office!

Why Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) Is So Well Directed

There are a few really well thought out and original opticals effects in the film. The motion control shots of the spinning Glaive particularly. There's also a great zip-pan shot of a human flame thrower, combining opticals with live action.

Tron Scherzo was sampled, very effectively, by artist Jega about 25 years ago.

Probably my favourite of all the music from the Tron films. Otherworldly, scarily unknown, atmospheric, computerised and with a human core:

I love the CS2 score. It has the library funk feel of a 1970s Amicus horror movie, and it's lovely when it rolls into cheery, British easy listening at the close of the end credits.

Diane Keaton had vast range and many accomplishments as an actor, especially in comedy. However, when I think of her acting I immediately think of her silent, super loose but tense reaction shots in the senate hearing scenes of The Godfather Part 2, and how she barely even needed a close up.

It appears you share the same fashions.

Even though it's a studio-bound film, it's so handsome, & has so much texture to the shots, sets & costumes. Its '30s style stands up well next to Dick Tracy/The Rocketeer.

I especially like how the cinematographer (of The Beyond) got neon pink into the office, through a deco stained glass window.

Yes, it makes sense for the blocking & wordplay.

I am not sure who other than John Landis at that time could emulate the Howard Hawks/Leo McCarey style and tone so authentically, but for colour. A lot of very precise physical & verbal comedy, constructed largely with two shots and reaction shots.

I seem to remember an interview or two with Tim Curry, who cites this film as one of his favourites to have worked on. He also mentioned there was three days of rehearsals for the main actors too; generously unusual for a feature film at that time.

Joe Dante has said that Mazursky considered shipping the leftover Clamp Center Mall set from Gremlins 2 to New York for this film. Imagine that.

One terribly minor error that only nerds will spot: Todd speaks about the argument for building a full working live-action set, but it's partially accompanied by a shot of a mostly matte painted interior from Empire Strike Back. However, it's such a convincing shot that the point isn't lost.

A great, well illustrated and digestible video about modern visual effects. @tvaziri.com talks passionately from a film storytelling as opposed to a technical perspective, highlighting the artistry & humanity of what many wrongly assume is now some automated process.

Thank you for sharing. You can really hear the similar sound of the Simon and Garrett songs!

When I first saw the film I thought the opening montage song was a film mix of Forever Your Girl by Paula Abdul. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d cut to it, fell in love with the track but couldn’t use it, so commissioned a soundalike.

I really enjoy the super twee, Hollywood depiction of the UK in the film. It’s a cartoon fairytale & everyone looks like they are having such a fun time. I like that James Newton Howard got to do a pompous Rule Britannia fanfare on this and the similarly toned King Ralph the following year.

I just read that the Peanuts are 75 years old today.

Good Grief!

I enjoy Dick Tracy, but given the illustrated, comic panel and matte painted look, it's quite a static movie. Having it married with the kaleidoscopic finale of Rollercoaster Rabbit would give a lot of rich, visual variety.
