true, but I’ve always seen that stuff as part of the coalition-building against what’s coming: reminding (often) older people that there were conservatives who fought nazism

just because modern conservatives now largely say “lol that’s good why would I fight it” doesn’t mean it wasn’t true then

I sincerely believe if you sat down 99% of people who talk like that and said “but should we sack judges, bishops and lecturers who make it harder for the government to reduce immigration and cut taxes?” every single one would say “yes of course lmao”

“The Tories in England long imagined that they were enthusiastic about monarchy, the church, and the beauties of the old English Constitution, until the day of danger wrung from them the confession that they are enthusiastic only about ground rent.”

marx reckoned these people never really existed (the ground rent quote) and I think in any meaningful way, they certainly don’t anymore and he perhaps was right that they never did.

genuine point: I think people trying to paint “not rejoining” as being the same thing as “continuing brexit” is probably sound politics, or at least worth trying, because of how much the status quo is now described as “Brexit” in the circles they are courting

maybe because I’m in a naively good faith mood but yeah if I were trying to make “ai” win hearts and not just investor cash, I would say “hey there’s this tech that I can apply to making a very good intuitive feature for your inbox” rather than “I have grown you a girlfriend and she loves em dashes”

feels like the British press used to talk about Tobruk a lot more

had this exact thought last week (admittedly during some rain, but I realised it had been ages since I’d been rained on)

the rear guard, the American dad’s army, had this problem in a very specific way - the joke in dad’s army is that the level of threat is the exactly correct level to be funny (unlikely but bad things *could* happen), but defending the continental US was instead “nothing bad can ever possibly happen”

to summarise how politics has changed in the last 20 years, if Doctor Who whispered “don’t you think s/he looks tired” as an attempt to undermine a national leader now, the logical next story beat would be the Doctor being bundled into a van or simply shot by one of the leader’s supporters

games workshop pays more corporation tax than the entire uk fishing industry but I know what I’d rather eat on a Friday night

it wasn’t just repeats, they remastered the originals to remove the strings (officially) and generally punch it up. so it was technically a remix if not a reboot

genuinely decent premise for an AH/alt-present satirical short film/sketch

Sometimes it's nice to remember that even Marcus Aurelius was like "you don't have to comment on everything bro"

Stephen, we both know they’re going to call it “Ron Will Leave The Show In Season 3”

it’s also totally unscientific, because radicalisation has gone *up* since Web 2.0 and ‘online town squares’. it’s a pleasing, and admittedly logical-sounding, Sorkinesque myth that making people constantly talk to those they disagree with makes them *more* changeable. all we see says the opposite

that’s awesome!

my theory is it’s been good at making the maps/gameplay grokkable to younger kids until that point and it just becomes Hard in quite a jarring way that can eat hours or weeks

Gold of course was in fact worse at this - the level spike at the end is bigger than any other entry in the franchise
