Happy birthday, Chuck! Hope you’ve had a wonderful day! 🎉🎉

Don’t know The Family Stone at all. Adding it to my list. Thank you!

Oh my gosh, my deepest condolences. I know firsthand – too well – how awful this period can be, but I trust that you and Biscuit made a host of wonderful memories, and that once you get past this period of grieving, they will be a huge source of joy and comfort to you.

Devastating news. Her technique was astonishing, her audience rapport unparalleled. If you need reminding of Diane Keaton’s range, might I recommend two ‘80s classics: BABY BOOM, froth that she elevates into wit, and SHOOT THE MOON, a brutal look at a failed marriage. variety.com/2025/film/ne...

“More than 4000 public servants lost their jobs ….. The CDC now has no capacity to respond to emerging infectious threats [or] foodborne illnesses. There is no infrastructure to contain outbreaks or coordinate with local health officials.”

A must-read to understand how bad the CDC massacre was. ⬇️

For more information about the Friday night massacre at CDC, I wrote up an analysis of who got terminated and what that means for public health.

Grateful to @saveamericamvmt.bsky.social for supporting and amplifying. We are in really terrible trouble.

Similarly describing him as an "expert on antifa" rather than an "antifascism researcher" further legitimates antifa as a proper noun in a way that makes zero sense
karlbode.com
you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate
NYT headline: "Rutgers Expert on Antifa Tries to Flee to Spain After Death Threats"

subheadline: "Mark Bray was teaching courses on antifascism. Turning Point USA accused him of belonging to antifa, which he denies. His flight to Spain was canceled abruptly on Wednesday night."

“Our trouble is that we always lived in our past – when you were 15 and I was 17. It was so good then that we tried to recapture it, and we never could.” Such beautiful, insightful writing.

I posted several TV columns last month, but forgot to plug them here. Oops. Here’s a look at three recent romcoms: LOVE YOU TO DEATH and COLIN FROM ACCOUNTS, which I adored, and NOBODY WANTS THIS, which – unlike the rest of the world – I found problematic: thatsallsiknow.blogspot.com/2025/07/love...

And here he is 20 years later, singing and dancing “The Right Girl” from Follies (assembled from video footage from the NY and LA productions, plus audio from the NY soundboard). At 51, still astounding. youtu.be/CmAttoJ_kmY?...

Have I already said Gene Nelson is amazing and should have been a bigger star? He's like if you blended Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire together. If you haven't seen this number from She's Working Her Way Through College (1952) you NEED to check it out! #TeaForTwo #TCMParty

That’s why I asked – it seemed so unlikely. 😅 I completely agree about Lucy. At the time, prestigious film critic James Agee raved, “Pretty Lucille Ball, who was born for the parts Ginger Rogers sweats over, tackles her ‘emotional’ role as if it were sirloin and she didn't care who was looking." 😊

As I noted last night, I first saw it in the ‘70s, and it just seemed like a big ol’ soapy drama. Did TCM call it a noir? I think if you start claiming #TheBigStreet is a noir, it’s a slippery slope before you find yourself making the case for Dark Victory, Kitty Foyle and The Lady Eve, you know? 😉

You crazy young kids. I believe I saw it 45 years ago on The Late Late Show, when I was in college. 😊 And I’m sorry, but if The Big Street is a film noir, I’m the Queen of England. (Given that he calls her Your Highness, it seemed like an appropriate metaphor. 😅)

You’re very welcome. 😊

I posted three TV columns last month, then forgot to plug them. Oops. First, a look at three recent procedurals: SHETLAND series 9, UNFORGOTTEN series 6 and BLACK SNOW season 2. All three determined to refresh old formulas, and all worth your time: thatsallsiknow.blogspot.com/2025/07/trut...

#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched

Two classics I’d never seen, and two faves I hadn’t watched in a while.

1. Magnificent. I don’t know enough Zinnemann of this era.

2. Brilliant satire of actors & acting.

3. Moving wartime schmaltz.

4. Margaret Sullavan at her most incandescent.

Just got the exact same call from *my* rheumatologist. My issue was with Medicare, which is no longer reimbursing telehealth appointments. 😵‍💫
