I'm kind of haunted by that Benjamin Arditi line about populism being the drunken dinner guest. It's like the Democrats/Labour think that they are helping someone sober up and realise that they've been rude at a dinner party rather than facing political antagonists.

Part of the reason that a film like Conclave is so popular is because it holds out the possibility that institutions might actually work. We'll be looking at the irony of the ending of that film, as well as comparing Winter Light and First Reformed (and much more!).
