Hello. A pinned thread about some of my interests (scholarly and otherwise).
Not sure how any of that leads to the conclusion that character is not of principle importance for good governance.
Not according to Aristotle or the article I commented on. The point is that even the best institutions require people of character to inhabit them. The character of leaders matters just as much to good governance, if not more, than the institutions themselves.
Reminder that for Aristotle the only difference between good and bad regimes is the virtue (or lack thereof) of the rulers.

There’s no institutional difference between kingship and tyranny.
The destruction of the East Wing is a reminder that America has violated the only check-and-balance that actually ends up mattering: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/the-only-c...

Congratulations @mariners.com! For the first time ever, my two favourite teams will play for a chance to go to the World Series.
New publication day!

What would happen if we paid more attention to how Francis Bacon used biblical themes to build up his scientific and technological project?

I was lucky enough to contribute a chapter to this great collections of essays: link.springer.com/book/10.1007...
Two passages written by people who witnessed the rise of European fascism. I wish they didn't fill me with apprehension in 2025.

One of my favourite things about academia is being given free books to review.
As an academic, I need to remind myself that I do this all for my kids.

By which I mean that they take my rough drafts and use them as scrap paper for their art...
"We are going to ensure that the Americans understand how pissed off we are."

I think this beautifully captures the general sentiment of Canadians.
Republicans can’t govern.
Democrats can’t be an effective opposition party.
Your 2025 Democratic Party.
George Grant wrote this in 1988. The particular circumstances have changed, but I'd argue the majority of Canadians feel the same way today.
The most fun I've had combining political theory and punk music since @shalmarr.bsky.social took me to a punk dive bar during @cpsa-acsp.bsky.social last year.
For sure! Even the title is fun: “I Need a Girl That I Can Train: Misogyny, Greek Philosophy, and the 90’s Pop Punk Explosion”
"The fear and pity aroused in us while watching a good person come to misery as a result of poor judgement is not the same as dealing with heartbreak by insulting or objectifying women. There is no 1-to-1 correspondence between Aristotle’s ideal tragedy and the typical Offspring or Blink 182 song."
And here’s a bonus Bonhoeffer meme (there really are memes about everything):
Dietrich Bonhoeffer. German pastor and theologian during Weimer and Nazi Germany who resisted the Lutheran church's embrace of Nazism and was eventually executed for his involvement in a plot to assassinate Hitler.
Our family's shared spotify account has become an endless battle between the teenager's pop music and my punk/pop-punk bands. It all comes to a beautiful coalescence when it recommends Avril Lavigne and makes us both happy.
