A fine example of how quickly *anything* can be recuperated as grist for the far right idea mill. Here, a minister pepper-sprayed in the face by masked ICE agents. The take: "When Christianity in America became so compromised that God had to use the state to put the communist clergy in their place."

As a powerful reminder of one of the darkest times in our country: When Christianity in America became so compromised that God had to use the state to put the communist clergy in their place."

Anyone could track how a well-compensated cadre of bad-faith idea-merchants have poisoned the information ecosphere. But what makes it tragic is how so many of them have the means to hit eject from the world they have created. The new version of private fallout shelters for the ultra-wealthy.

Official DHS account. Posting videos of militarized shock troops forcefully subduing street protesters.

Threatening amplified state violence against political dissenters. If only there were a word to describe that sort of regime.

Of course, the TX regents. Champing at the bit to tighten right-wing ideological control over the state uni system .
Screenshot: “UT System Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife said in a statement shared
first with the American-Statesman on Thursday that the system is "honored" to be selected and is "enthusiastically" working with UT to review the demands.
"Higher education has been at a crossroads in recent years, and we have worked very closely with Governor Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick and Speaker Burrows to implement sweeping changes for the benefit of our students and to strengthen our institutions to best serve the people of Texas," Eltife said. "Today we welcome the new opportunity presented to us and we look forward to working with the Trump Administration on it."

The thing is, you know at least one of these schools is going to knuckle under -- passing off its craven capitulation as some bad-faith commitment to "intellectual diversity". This is what you get when unis are run by CEOs and the consultant class.

Somewhere back in the White House communications wing: "now, what if we took all the usual racism and just turned it up to eleven?"

Question for the hivemind (skymind?): is there any downside to joining the Anthropic settlement? I don't see anything obvious, but legal stuff is 1000% not my specialty.

"The compact asks universities...to bar employees from expressing political views on behalf of their employer... It seeks to create a more welcoming environment for conservatives, asking colleges to make governance changes and abolish departments [viewed as hostile to conservative ideas]"
Screenshot from article: "Much of the document focuses on the campus political climate.

The compact asks universities to ensure a "vibrant marketplace of ideas on campus" and to bar employees from expressing political views on behalf of their employer, unless the matter affects the school. It seeks to create a more welcoming environment for conservatives, asking colleges to make governance changes and abolish departments that "purposefully punish, belittle, and even spark violence against conservative ideas."

"Institutions of higher education are free to develop models and values other than those" in the memo, if the institution elects to forgo federal benefits, the document says."

"Our hope is that a lot of schools see that this is highly reasonable."
Screenshot from article: "The expansive 10-point memo, dubbed the "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education," puts forth a wide-ranging set of terms the administration says are intended to elevate university standards and performance. Universities that sign on will get "multiple positive benefits," including "substantial and meaningful federal grants," says a letter addressed to university leaders.

"Our hope is that a lot of schools see that this is highly reasonable," said May Mailman, senior adviser for special projects at the White House.

The memo demands that schools ban the use of race or sex in hiring and admissions, freeze tuition for five years, cap international undergrad enrollment at 15%, require that applicants take the SAT or similar test and quell grade inflation."

Your daily reminder: fascism isn't just about the power-obsessed strongmen. Instead, it's about the millions who delight in the strongman's malice, control, and violence -- those who revel in his cruelty and desire ever more. That is the malignant heart of the far right.
