Interesting. I remember the pub, but I can't recall anyone ever using the name for an area of Elswick/Low Benwell. Mind, we used to call in a general way all the area from about the Rokeby Arms along to the cattle market Scotswood.

#NewcastleUponTyne High Friars Lane was notable as the birth place of Richard Grainger the great Newcastle developer. Born 9th October 1797. His father Thomas a porter on the Quayside and his mother Amelia who was born in Gibraltar where her father was serving as a soldier.

#Elswick Hadn't realised that there was an area in Elswick known as Crooked Billet, I knew about the Crooked Billet Hotel.
Newcastle Weekly Chronicle of 8th October 1887 indicated upwards of 10,000 lived in the area and proposals had been for its own railway station.
