Phage predation is a biomarker for disease severity and shapes pathogen genetic diversity in cholera patients.

To support major conclusions, we repeated key analyses using qPCR instead of metagenomics to quantify phage ICP1 and V. cholerae

Mild dehydration in cholera patients is associated with a higher ratio of phage ICP1 to V. cholerae. In the absence of ICE-encoded resistance, phage select for nonsynonymous point mutations in the Vc genome. In contrast, severe dehydration is associated with a lower ICP:Vc ratio. Vc encoding ICE-based phage defences select for nonsynonymous points mutations in ICP1.
