"This includes the development of advanced computer simulations of the disease, so that we can design the best diagnostic and treatment approaches for each individual patient.”
ucddublin.bsky.social
“Research is the engine behind new medicines,” said Professor Kolch. “POI-2 is all about linking top-notch cancer research to clinical translation.
ucddublin.bsky.social
This new phase of the programme will focus on expanding scientific scope and infrastructure, strengthening clinical engagement, enhancing patient and public involvement, and providing new training opportunities for the next generation of cancer researchers.
ucddublin.bsky.social
The mission of POI is to develop tailored diagnostic and therapeutic solutions using cutting-edge technologies and data, ensuring every patient receives the right treatment at the right time.
ucddublin.bsky.social
Coordinated by Systems Biology Ireland at UCD and led by Prof Walter Kolch, POI-2 brings together five Irish universities, six cancer research charities, and seven international industry partners in a strategic partnership aimed at transforming cancer diagnosis and treatment in Ireland

Having identified the mutation in the Emc1 gene responsible for vision loss, she believes the Kennedy team now have an extremely useful tool for studying eye diseases and finding new treatments.
ucddublin.bsky.social
According to Dr McCann, with inherited renal disease, “genes needed to help the eye process light signals weren’t working as they should”, and her finding shows "the vital role of Emc1 in vision and lays the groundwork for exploring potential solutions to its dysfunction.”
ucddublin.bsky.social
Working with a research team led by Professor Breandan Kennedy, Dr McCann identified a mutation in the Emc1 gene that causes underdeveloped eye cells, weaker responses to light, and changes in the normal structure of the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye.

👩‍🎓🏅 Dr Tess McCann has won this year’s UCD Conway Festival Gold Medal for the discovery of a gene mutation responsible for inherited retinal diseases leading to vision loss.
