According to Dr McCann, with inherited renal disease, “genes needed to help the eye process light signals weren’t working as they should”, and her finding shows "the vital role of Emc1 in vision and lays the groundwork for exploring potential solutions to its dysfunction.”

Working with a research team led by Professor Breandan Kennedy, Dr McCann identified a mutation in the Emc1 gene that causes underdeveloped eye cells, weaker responses to light, and changes in the normal structure of the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye.

In 2025, Conor returned to UCD to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Human Resource Management and Employment Relations Department, where he presented awards in memory of his father, the department's founder, Professor Brian J. Hillery.
