In his new role, Professor Ferriter will support this mission to promote mutual understanding and reconciliation through the study of history.

He succeeds Dr Martin Mansergh, who served as patron until his death in September 2025.

The foundation works to preserve and expand access to the late historian's writings and broadcasts, and to develop educational initiatives focused on Ireland’s contested past.

Snapshot Europe is a wildlife camera-trap exercise carried by researchers all across Europe.

The images captured as part of the project are uploaded to a Europe-wide wildlife monitoring dataset to help guide important decisions around conservation.

Approved personally by the King of the United Kingdom, the Royal Gold Medal is bestowed on those recognised for having had a significant impact on advancing architecture.

Noting McLaughlin's long-standing influence across architectural practice and pedagogy, it cited that his career of more than three decades reflected a consistent engagement with the cultural, environmental, and social dimensions of architecture.

And in 2015, Sheila O'Donnell and John Tuomey, who were professors at the UCD School of Architecture at the time, received the honour.

This is the third time that architecture graduates from UCD have won a RIBA Royal Gold Medal.

In 2019, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara were named as recipients, becoming the only female partnership to have won the prestigious award in its 171-year history.

A graduate of UCD School of Architecture, Planning & Environmental Policy in 1984, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) praised the renowned Dublin architect for a lifetime of work which showed “remarkable consistency”, and that was “shaped by a deep sensitivity to place”.

For 2026, the University of Oxford retook the top position, with ETH Zurich dropping to second. University College London and Imperial are joint third.
