Not that it changes anything but i think the journalist one was AI? She had three hands. Of course it’s not a leap to imagine that. Like… at all. It’s not a leap to imagine almost anything at this point.

That said apparently the issue was the AI code itself hitting the API every 100ms (not a bad actor using the key) so it still would’ve happened if the key was restricted (and maybe it was… dunno) but still. It’s interesting that Google makes is so easy to accidentally rack up a $50K bill 🙃

So someone “vibe coded” an app w/ a Google Maps API key that racked up a $50,000 bill and… LOL. But TBF those keys default to wide open. No restrictions by domain, IP, enabled APIs, etc. Massive potential for damage. They should be like a deadman’s switch… default to fully locked w/o explicit input.

That’s the part I don’t get but the simple explanation is… he didn’t know HOW to kill the app or delete the key 😁

Ya when you create a key the default is wide open… no rate limits, no restrictions by app / domain / IP, no restrictions on allowed APIs. Which is all fun and games until someone pokes out an eye. Should be a deadman’s switch where it defaults to fully locked and you have to manually make allowances

TBF Google does make it easy to fuck up and gives no notice of wild spikes. Had a key stolen once ages ago (exposed in GitHub… oops) and it was a temporary dev/test key w/o restrictions (big oops). Racked up thousands and the first I knew was when I got the bill a month later. No LLM tho’. All me 😂

Screw it I decided to give E2 of The Last Frontier on AppleTV a try. Nope. didn’t make it 10 min before turning it off and removing it from my list. Ludicrous writing, insufferable melodrama, constantly angry sexist cop, and nonsense CIA “protocols” to add “intrigue” ™
