Curtain-Fall Hour draws close, and Phainon remains wide awake, restless with a kind of nervous energy he can neither deplete or dispel. Anticipation has him sitting on the edge of his bed, naked except for a sheet across his middle, his fingers curling around the edge of the mattress as he waits.

He doesn’t wait long.

Mydei enters in silence, bare armed and draped only in a loose chiton instead of his princely raiment. He is burgundy and gold, lustrous in the sunlight pouring into Phainon’s room. Sorrow stains his eyes, a grief he certainly won’t speak of. They so rarely speak in these hours anyway, and when they do, it’s with body instead of voice, letting flesh and sinew communicate what words never could.

There are so many things Phainon wants to say, this time. So many words he wants to speak, but they all crumble to ash as Mydei comes closer. This time tomorrow, Mydei will be gone, returning to Castrum Kremnos.
