I think I get most of the other otherworldly stuff: racism, health conspiracies, and gun-obsessions, as they come from some fundamental human reflex combined with bad information..

Someone please explain why these rural Americans, who I thought were all about being humble, hard-working, and showing your character through actions, overwhelmingly support a bloated self-obsessed, depraved, and spoiled baby-golfer

“I think China is using [clean technology] in a very, very geopolitically savvy way, taking advantage of America’s stupidity and regression back into a petrostate. China just wins. America has abrogated the playing field.”

In today’s Vatnik Soup, I’ll introduce American propagandist Alexandra Jost, aka “Sasha”. She’s best known for being paid by the Russian state to spread pro-Kremlin propaganda — and for doing it with a big smile.

EU has proposed imposing sanctions on A7A5, a ruble-backed stablecoin tied to sanctioned Russian actors, - Bloomberg

The sanctions will prohibit any engagement by EU-based entities in transactions involving the token and target several banks for enabling crypto-related transactions.

This result is absolutely fucking golden. Moldova’s elections just showed how pro-European forces (PAS, the party of Maia Sandu) completely wiped the floor with Dodon’s pro-russian bloc.

Meet the Vacation Studentship 2025 grant awardees 🤩! We loved receiving these photos! When you publish with us, we have the funds to continue supporting Early Career Microbiologists in developing their knowledge and skills.
A graphic with photos of Early Career Microbiologist during their lab-time during the Vacation Studentship, which is a grant provided by the Microbiology Society. In the photos people are smiling. A lot of photos on the screen of individuals working in the lab. Another page of photos on the screen of individuals working in the lab. Delighted to see our paper studying the evolution of plasmids over the last 100 years, now out! Years of work by Adrian Cazares, also Nick Thomson @sangerinstitute.bsky.social - this version much improved over the preprint. Final version should be open access, apols.

Our mistake when we wrote _Calling Bullshit_ was to assume that people would deliberately abuse the flexibility of quantitative metrics to mislead.

We devoted inadequate attention to people making up complete and utter nonsense with no possible grounding in fact.

Smart people are a threat to autocrats. Every dictatorship ever has put a leash on academics and thinkers.
If he succeeds, of course the US will become worse and poorer along every metric, but that’s a price they are willing to pay for the kleptocrats to be safe and sound.. and still rich
