Sometimes it feels like we all just have to go back to e-mail lists and be happy with them.

A community Discord I'm on has set up exactly such a thing so that if we're ever shut down for any reason (it's not even an NSFW Discord) we have a contingency and we don't just all lose contact.

If you have any level of understanding of how LLMs (which are what are driving the hype wave labeled as "AI") work, you'll see how hollow these promises are.

But to enough lay people these models look like magic to drive decisionmaking by minorities of managers, and we're all on the hook for it.

Lead paint makers knew it was poison as early as 1900. It wasn't banned until 1978.

Asbestos makers knew it was toxic in 1918. It wasn't banned until 2024.

AI salesmen KNOW what they're selling is socially toxic and they're hoping they'll have decades to make money before we realize it, too.

Also Spotify is a quintessential example of how under capitalism nobody is ever content with making money.

We're talking about a company that *prints* money as the de-facto default music streaming service for millions and it's still just not enough. They can't stick to what they're good at. MORE!

It's funny that after more or less "solving" music piracy, streaming services have become so awful, expensive, and unpredictable that they're driving people back to either own-your-own or pirating.

After being burned by the Google Play Music shutdown I went to Plex and never looked back.

i dropped spotify a while back. moved all the music over to a different service, but tbh i dont really rely on music streaming anymore. I'd rather drop like 10-20 bucks on an album or two on bandcamp every month and curate my collection that way

A friend of mine used to say that "even falling forwards is forwards progress".
