A large cicada of the genus Magicicada, its eyes glowing magenta. Cicadas spend most of their life underground, only emerging near the end of a 17-year cycle to spend a few weeks above ground as adult imagoes. Somewhere in Pennsylvania in 1987, a grad student named Red walks along a wooded path, his feet crunching the countless cicada shells littering the ground. The mating song of the males is deafening, an urgent chorus of want and desire. Red barely registers the piercing song, so lost in his thoughts is he. He later looks up the name of the shedded exoskeletons and learns they are called exuviae. A perfect word, taught to Red by Brood X.
