More than two-thirds of Americans hold negative views of the economy, according to a Washington Post-Ipsos poll last month. Despite Republicans’ fervent messaging that Democrats’ health care demands caused the current government shutdown, early polling suggests a majority of Americans believe the president and his party are to blame.

Protesters and organizers said they weren’t motivated by any single policy area — attendees cited frustration with everything from Trump’s immigration crackdowns to his slashing of the federal workforce to general malaise about the economy — but they shared a sense of concern that Trump was acting outside the bounds of the presidency.

“The truth is that he is enacting a detailed step-by-step plan to try to destroy all of the things that protect our democracy: free speech, fair elections and independent press, the right to peacefully protest,” Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, said of Trump at the protest in downtown Washington. “But the truth is he has not won yet. The people still rule in this country.”
