I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

I truly cannot emphasize enough how this is straight up Lysenkoism.

Because of the incredible work of our nation’s scientists, we have our finger tips on the closest thing humanity has ever come to “a cure for cancer”, but brainworm over here doesn’t believe in it.

Fantastic report from the Humane Slaughter Association on how to transition to humane slaughter for wild-caught fish (of which *trillions* are caught and killed annually)

A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius.

This is one of my favorite @waterbirdsociety.bsky.social papers I've ever handled as managing editor #ornithology

Proud to be part of producing this report on how wild fishes are killed with proposed ways in which we can improve their welfare in fisheries #fishwelfare

📢 NEW REPORT: Each year, over 1 trillion wild-caught finfish are slaughtered, most without humane stunning.

Our report offers evidence-based steps to improve slaughter practices and promote more humane treatment of wild-caught finfish.

🔍 Over a trillion wild finfish are slaughtered each year, typically without stunning. This study critically maps global evidence on the issue, revealing major gaps in #fishwelfare research & urgent need for species-specific practices in wild fisheries.

The quote in this article from Richard Hanania infuriates me. How can you do such a bad job thinking through your own ideology that when it comes into power, you don't like it anymore, despite it looking basically exactly like what you asked for?
wildanigraham.bsky.social
I think there can be principled reasons to contextually switch between intent- and outcome-focused paradigms, but I suspect there is a lot going on besides principle here.
wildanigraham.bsky.social
Just as one example, know many folks who assess whether something is racist based on the intent of the actor, but whether a charity is good based on the outcome of their work.
wildanigraham.bsky.social
I'm interested if there are correlations between these views, because in my experience, people can be extremely variable in terms of whether they focus on outcomes or intent depending on the context.
wildanigraham.bsky.social
This whole thread is quite interesting, and feels reminiscent to me of the difference between those who think various values (racism, "goodness," ally-ship, etc.) are best understood in terms of intent vs in terms of outcome.

There are different ways in which honesty can be understood and what people consider to be the truth.
One approach relies on evidence and is concerned with the state of the world.
The other approach relies on intuition and is concerned with sincere expression of belief.
